The Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels continue their Western Division showdown with Game 2 of a four-game set Friday night at Angels Stadium.
Texas won the series opener Thursday night 7-6 in 12 innings.
L.A., losers of two games in a row, sits in second place in the AL West, two games back of the division-leading Oakland A’s. The Rangers, winners of three straight games, lurk a half-game back of the Angels and 2 ˝ back of the A’s.
If either of these teams is going to make the playoffs, it will have to be as the winner of the West. L.A. is 9 ˝ games back in the AL wild-card race, Texas 10 games behind.
The Angels have won four of seven meetings with the Rangers thus far this season.
Texas is a winning 29-24 on the road this season, and 26-32 as underdogs.
L.A. is just 25-27 at home this year, and 31-31 as favorites.
Vincent Padilla (10-7, 4.36) takes the mound for the Rangers Friday night. In his most recent outing, Padilla got bombed by the Kansas City Royals last Friday for 7 ER in just 3 2/3 IP. With that, Padilla has allowed 10 ER and 22 H+W in his last 17 2/3 innings of work. Texas is 12-10 in Padilla’s starts this season, the over/under 11-11.
In his only start this year vs. Los Angeles, Padilla got bopped for 4 ER and 11 hits in just five IP in a 7-6 Rangers loss back in May.
The Angels counter with Big John Lackey (10-6, 2.95) Friday. Lackey has given up 10 ER and 32 H+W in his last 18 2/3 IP. L.A. is 13-9 in Lackey’s starts this year, the o/u also 13-9.
In seven starts this year and last vs. Texas, Lackey has allowed 20 ER and 52 H+W in 39 IP.
The Rangers own a .341 team OBP this season, 7th-best in the AL, and are averaging 5.1 runs per game.
The Angels rank 4th-worst in the league with their .328 team OBP, and are averaging 4.9 RPG.
The Texas bullpen has given up 10 ER and 27 H+W in its last 21 2/3 IP.
The L.A. bullpen has allowed 5 ER and 14 H+W in its last 14 IP.
The o/u is a surprising 47-58 in Rangers games this year, 57-46 in Angels games, but just 23-27 at Angels Stadium.
