The Nashville Predators are on the verge of their first Conference Finals appearance in franchise history, and can accomplish that goal when they visit the St. Louis Blues for Game 5 of their Western Conference semifinal series on Friday night. After not expecting to even get out of the first round, the Predators are now 7-1 this postseason after sweep top-seed Chicago in the first round and taking three of the first four against the Blues. James Neal scored the winning goal with 6:57 left in the third period on Tuesday, as Nashville held off St. Louis 2-1 to take a commanding 3-1 series lead. Goalie Pekka Rinne allowed just three goals total in the first round sweep, but allowed six over the first two games in St. Louis in this series. He seems to be back on his game now, yielding just a goal in each of Games 3 and 4 in Nashville. He has posted a 1.33 goals-against average and an amazing .953 save percentage – the highest for a goalie with at least eight starts since 1982-83. Nashville’s defensemen continue to supply a lot of offense with eight goals and 14 assists in eight playoff games.

Speaking of offensive production, the Blues need to start converting on the man-advantage if they want to make a serious comeback in this series. The Blues have converted on just 1-of-9 chances in the series and 2-of-24 in the postseason. The Blues scored two goals in two games in Nashville, but can’t count on the home ice to cure their woes. They are 6-8 in their last 14 playoff games at Scottrade Center, including 2-2 this postseason. Alexander Steen is performing well and has points in three straight games and seven in the playoffs. Jaden Schwartz joins Steen with the team lead in points and goals, while defenseman Joel Edmundson has a +10 rating in nine games, which trails on Pittsburgh’s Phil Kessel (+11). St. Louis has been in this spot before and succeeded, erasing 3-1 series deficits to win seven-game playoffs series in 1991 (Detroit) and 1999 (Arizona). Goalie Jake Allen is second behind only Rinne in save percentage this postseason (.936).

Rinne is back on his game and the Nashville defense continues to produce. The Blues don’t have the home ice advantage like some teams do, which gives Nashville, in my opinion, a great chance to close out this series.
