Tony's Takes

My weekly feature once again give's you my candid takes and highly regarded opinions about the Sports arena and gaming world in general for this past week of sports, and what a week it was. NBA Playoff action, Indy 500, MLB in full swing, and of course the long weekend as Summer officially begins. It was a good week, not a great week for Midwest Sports Consultants clients as we continue to maintain a Top 5 ranking in the NBA, and a Top 9 ranking in MLB. Did anyone notice the bullpens for MLB teams are stinking up the joint so far this year? On with the show....
LA LAKERS in the Finals Again-Here is a shocker, No one in the West can contend with Shaq! Did I not say that the past 2 weeks in this column, and did I not tell you all to lay the -300 on the moneyline for the Lakers to win this series? Of course I did, and while the T Wolves were my team all year, LA simply has too many tools in the arsenal to throw at you, and without Cassel, the T Wolves fell victim to Shaq picking up rebounds and easy baskets, and Kobe or Kareem Rush, or Derrick Fisher or George to show up in the 4th quarter and put the game out of reach, as Kevin Garnett cannot carry any team by himself. Minnesota's problem all year, they simply did not have a low post presence and cannot stay physical with anyone for any length of time. Who really can in the West? Maybe the Spurs, but they fell victim to the bench of the Lakers this year. Karl Malone is making 1 million dollars this year, basically in a swan song year to get a ring, and Gary Peyton is making 4 million for the same thing. I think they are paying way too much for Payton and not enough for Malone, the salaries should be reversed.
Next up for the Lakers, a team from the East, which CAN provide a test underneath for the sheer strength that LA has. I would be surprised if LA did not win it all, but it will be a test for them, especially if Detroit can get through their series with Indiana, they match up better against LA and will provide more of a challenge.
Sportsbooks in Atlantic City? A recent online sports betting article had me laughing at the hypocrite lawyers for the NFL. The State of New Jersey wants to legalize sportsbooks in Atlantic City ( and raise some money for the state tax coffers as well). Some quotes from the NFL's legal guru Jay Moyer, who states that Sportsbooks in Atlantic City would change the way that Sports fans watch games! Duh!!!! Are you from this planet Mr. Moyer? "It would create a pervasive climate of suspicion about any controversial play in a game," Moyer said. "It would send two very bad messages. One is that anything goes when it comes to raising revenues and, two, that gambling and sports are natural partners."
Hey NFL, here is a FACT, Gambling drives almost all revenues and TV ratings for your sport! The NFL knows this, but yet will not admit it. Direct TV packages sales alone are proof that people who have no interest in the San Diego Chargers who live in South Carolina have a HUGE interest in them when they took 3 points and want to watch the game. Recently my Vice President in charge of Marketing and College Capper guru, Jerry Johnson, made a trip to Costa Rica and visited with Dalton at MVP Sportsbook, and was told the most action in any sport comes on Sunday Night ESPN football games. Guys are loading up or trying to get back what they lost on Sunday afternoon. That is why it is the most popular show, that has the highest share rating for ESPN, because of gamblers, along with regular Joe's, is Sunday Night Football. Mainly Gamblers are watching, have NO illusions. Why doesn't the NFL realize that TV ratings soared back in the Late 50's and 60's because that is about the time Las Vegas opened up odds in the NFL, and that is why a published injury report was posted in the NFL, so books could gage an accurate pointspread. Wake up, the NFL and gambling are partners, whether Jay Moyer and the NFL admit it or not.
I am in Vegas EVERY YEAR for the Super Bowl. This year the NFL disallowed Hotels and Casino's from charging admission fees to show the game in front of large crowds on large theater style screens. They wanted a cut of the revenue! Proof is in the pudding, have NO doubts about it.
Those are my takes, I could be wrong, but I doubt it! The NBA Finals start Sunday, MLB is killing the books, be sure and check out a Top 10 ranked capper daily and win some cash! |
