Middling
If you guessed that this term refers toplaying two different bets – with limited risk, ofcourse – then you guessed right. It’s not asdifficult as you think, as long as you are willing to putin the time and effort to do some line shopping. The bestopportunity for finding middles is to have a good localoutlet and several respected offshore sportsbooks. You shouldbe able to search and find some respected outlets that caterto underdog players and some that cater to favorites.
Here is a simple list of guidelines to use when attemptingto middle a game:
1) You need at least a two-point differentialin the point spread. For example, you are looking at thelines and you see the following situation:
Sportsbook A
Pittsburgh Steelers +5.5
Dallas Cowboys –5.5
Sportsbook B
Pittsburgh Steelers +3.5
Dallas Cowboys –3.5
What will make the above scenario more likelyto happen is if you are able to use a local bookmaker whoincreases the line on the local team or is slow in movingthe line if it changes. To put this into play you wouldmake the following wagers:
Wager #1 - $110 to win $100 on the PittsburghSteelers +5.5 at Sportsbook A
Wager #2 - $110 to win $100 on the Dallas Cowboys -3.5 atSportsbook B
If you are lucky and the Denver Broncoswin the game by four or five points, then you will win bothwagers for a net win of $200. Anything other than that scenariowill result in a $10 loss. In order to come out ahead youwill need to do better than one win out of 20 attempts.
2) The other criteria you could use is ifthere is a difference in the line that spans a key number. The following line will give you a good chance at a middleeven though there is only a one-point difference.
Sportsbook A
Pittsburgh Steelers +3.5
Dallas Cowboys –3.5
Sportsbook B
Pittsburgh Steelers +2.5
Dallas Cowboys –2.5
