On the same night the Miami Heat takes on the Detroit Pistons in an NBA Eastern Conference showdown, the Miami Hurricanes travel north to challenge the Michigan Wolverines in a National Invitational Tournament quarterfinal game Wednesday night.
Miami went 7-9 in the Big East this season, tying for seventh place with Clemson and Virginia. The Hurricanes have won three of their last four games after escaping from Creighton as one-point winners Monday night.
The Wolverines finished at 8-8 in the Big 10 this season, tied for sixth place. But they're the only Big 10 team still playing; all six of the teams from that conference that made the NCAA tournament and the other two teams that made the NIT have been beaten.
Michigan had lost three games in a row before beating UTEP and Notre Dame (in double overtime) in its two NIT games so far.
Tonight's game is a rematch of an early-season non-conference bout. Michigan went down to south Florida in November and kicked Miami 74-53. The Wolverines outrebounded the Hurricanes 42-27 and forced Miami into committing 19 turnovers (Michigan committed 12).
