Two teams who would make up half of the National League’s playoff entrants if the regular season ended today meet for a three-game series this week when the New York Mets visit the Cincinnati Reds.
New York just took two of three games from the Chicago Cubs over the weekend and still sits atop the NL East, 11 ½ games clear of the second-place Atlanta Braves.
Cincinnati just swept four games from the Colorado Rockies over the weekend and holds down second place in the NL Central, 3 ½ games back of the division-leading St. Louis Cardinals. The Reds also lead the NL wild-card race by 2 ½ games over Arizona.
These two teams split a four-game set in New York a month ago. Last year, these teams split six games, each sweeping the other at home.
The Mets are 28-19 on the road this year, while Cincy is 24-22 at home.
Mike Pelfrey (1-0, 3.60) will make his second career start forNew York in the series opener Tuesday night. Pelphry made hisML debut 10 days ago, surviving 2 ER and 9 H+W in 5 IP (and throwingover 100 pitches) in a 17-3 Mets’ killing of the Florida Marlins.
Cincy counters with lefty Eric Milton (6-4, 5.19) Tuesday night. Milton has allowed 11 ER and 22 H+W in his last 18 1/3 IP. The Reds are 6-8 in Milton’s starts this year, the over/under 9-4.
Milton has made three starts vs. the Mets this year and last, giving up 13 ER and 29 H+W in 15 IP.
New York, the highest-scoring team (494 runs) in the NL, owns a .334 team OBP, 7th-best in the league, and is averaging 5.4 runs per game.
Cincinnati ranks 3rd in the NL with its’ .343 team OPB, and is averaging 5.0 RPG.
