The slumping Seattle Mariners visit the Big Apple this week for a three-game series with the surging New York Yankees beginning Monday night at Yankee Stadium.
After recently climbing within a game of first place in the AL West, Seattle has lost eight of its’ last 10 games, including two of three in Toronto over the weekend. But while the Mariners sit in last place in their division, they’re only four games back of the first-place Oakland A’s.
New York just swept three games from the Chicago White Sox over the weekend and has won seven of its’ last eight to pull within a half-game of first-place Boston in the AL East.
Seattle is 20-24 on the road this season, and 25-32 as underdogs.
The Yankees are 29-17 at home this year, and 47-29 as favorites.
New York won the season series vs. the Mariners last year seven games to three. This is the first meeting between these two teams this season.
Lefty Jarrod Washburn (4-9, 4.58) will start for Seattle in the series opener Monday night. Washburn has allowed 7 ER and 25 H+W in his last 19 IP. The Mariners are 8-10 in Washburn’s starts this year, the over/under 9-9.
Washburn made two starts last year for the Angels vs. the Yankees, allowing 4 ER and 17 H+W in 15 1/3 IP.
C-M Wang (9-4, 4.00), who’s become a bit of a horse lately, will head to the mound Monday for New York. Wang has pitched into the eighth inning in six of his last seven starts. He’s allowed 8 ER and 29 H+W in his last 21 2/3 IP. The Yanks are 11-8 in Wang’s starts this year, the o/u 9-10.
Wang made two starts vs. Seattle last year, giving up 6 ER and 13 H+W in 13 2/3 IP.
The Mariners own a paltry .322 team OBP this year, which ranks as 2nd-worst in the AL, and are averaging 4.8 runs per game. Seattle has also scored just 29 runs over its’ last 10 games.
New York owns a .364 team OBP this season, 2nd-best in the majors, and is averaging 5.7 RPG.
The Mariners bullpen ranks 14th in the majors with a 4.11 ERA.
The Yankees pen ranks 7th with a 3.83 ERA.
New York, still without Matsui, Sheffield and Cano, lists OF Johnny Damon as probable for Monday’s game. Damon sat out Sunday with a calf injury.
The o/u is 48-41 in Seattle games this season, 47-41 in Yankees games, but just 21-24 at Yankee Stadium.
The Ultimatecapper Pick: Washburn has been a horrible betting proposition away from Safeco this year. We like the Yanks here.
