Bettors come out of the woodwork from all overthe place to bet on everything they possible can including bothoffice pools and sides/totals. Many of these bettors are weekendwarriors at best but mostly recreational bettors that are uninformedwhen it comes to sniffing out value relative to the point spread. Most of these guys will get smoked as the
sportsbooks
have planned long ahead for their arrival which has them foamingat the mouth and eyeballing the latest version of Cadillac attheir local dealership.
With that being said, let's take a look at someways you can protect yourself from being eaten by the wolves.
March Madness is a HUGE event that carriesa massive betting handle. The
bookies
have had a long time to examine power ratings and put out a linethat is not to a public bettors advantage. Since oodles of folkscome out to bet these games more so than the regular season, thesecollege basketball point spreads are more likely to be inflated,ESPECIALLY on high visibility teams that you see on TV often. This goes for big name schools as well. Let me tell ya, thesebookies are no dummies but with a little seasoning before youhead into the melee you can avoid getting waxed. Simply don'tfind yourself betting on the big schools. Sure, their likely towin their games straight up, but as long as a spread or odds areinvolved, straight up doesn't mean a hill of beans.
A bettor has to assess whether a game has valueor not relative to the spread. It's hard to get used to doingin the get-go, however you will lose less and win more if yourable to cross over from the dark side and make the adjustmentnecessary to be a winning amateur handicapper. If you are bettingon a school that you think will win because their Duke or UNCand they can't lose, that's not a good basis for making a play.Nor is "my father went there" or "you were a fan of somebody thatwent there so your going to bet on them."
No joke, the things listed above are some people'sreasons for betting on certain teams. All are a sure way to gettaken to the cleaners and for anybody that's lost a bet, we knowthat's no fun! Good teams win, bad teams cover. Believe it! It'skinda fun and somewhat addictive rooting for underdogs as well.Give it a shot, you may enjoy it!
Other notes of interest include checking theodds every day to check for line movement. Lines move due to onesided action (people all betting on the same side with the otherside getting very little action.) Don't let this suck you intojoining the public consensus. The public is more often wrong thanright. It's kind of like the old saying: "If people were jumpingoff a bridge, does that mean that you would jump too?"
