Conference USA favorite Louisiana Tech, starts conference play tonight in Bowling Green, Kentucky to take on Western Kentucky. The Bulldogs got off to an easy start last week with a 62-15 win over Southern. Senior running back Kenneth Dixon saw limited action in the blowout, but made his mark with 106 yards rushing and another 65 receiving with 2 total touchdowns. He ran for 1,299 yards last year and is a preseason 1st team All-CUSA selection. Florida Gator transfer Jeff Driskel also had a nice game in his first start for LA Tech. He was 12-15, 274 yards, and 4 touchdowns. Despite their opponent, this is a pretty good offense and maybe the best in Conference USA. Their 62 points were the 10th most in all of College Football last week. They destroyed Western Kentucky last year at home 59-10 as 7 point favorites.

Western Kentucky is coming off an 8-5 season that saw them win their last 4 regular season games and Bowl game after losing to LA Tech 59-10. Their big win came as 23 point underdogs at Marshall 67-66 to end the season. Last week they had a much more impressive win than Louisiana Tech by beating Vanderbilt in Nashville. Now Vanderbilt is not an SEC powerhouse, but beating an SEC team on the road is a great confidence boost. The Hilltoppers were held to under 100 yards until late in the 3rd quarter when they took a 7-3 lead. Tight End Tyler Higbee was the hero with 4 catches for 102 yards and the go-ahead touchdown. Senior QB Brandon Doughty was 19-30, 209 yards, and a touchdown.

This is a big early season game in C-USA play. Both teams have eyes on the Conference Championship Game later this year and a win tonight would put either team in great position. Overall, Louisiana Tech is a better team, but Western Kentucky is playing at home and after last year’s 59-10 beating, the Hilltoppers also have revenge on their minds. I’ll take a mild upset here even though Western Kentucky is favored.

Pick: Western Kentucky -1.5
