The Los Angeles Lakers begin a four-game East Coast road trip and try to put their recent struggles behind them when they visit the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday night – broadcast on TNT. The Lakers were inching closer to the .500-mark, but a current five-game losing streak has them on the outside of the postseason picture. Slowing teams down on the defensive end has been an issue, allowing 118.6 points during its slide and dropped a 118-95 decision at home to the Houston Rockets on Sunday. Brandon Ingram has been one of the bright-spots during the losing streak, averaging 19.5 points on 51.5% shooting – up from his yearly averages of 16.0 and 46.3% respectively. The 76ers are already exceeding expectations despite a bad home loss on Monday to the lowly Phoenix Suns, 115-101. Philadelphia is currently the No. 5 seed in the Eastern Conference, but are just two games from being out of the top eight. The Sixers won the first meeting between these teams back on November 15th, a 115-109 win at Staples Center.

Lonzo Ball continues to work through both high expectations and now tightness in his calves. The No. 2 overall draft pick, who went through practice with the team on Tuesday and is expected to play Thursday, was limited to 22 minutes in Sunday’s loss and went 0-of-4 from the field, lowering his shooting percentage on the season to a dismal 31.3%, including 25% from beyond the arc. Los Angeles is getting solid production from another rookie, power forward Kyle Kuzma, who recorded a double-double in each of his last two games and leads the club in scoring average at 16.8 a game.

The Lakers have covered the spread in 5 of the last 8 meetings.

Philadelphia’s rookie point guard Ben Simmons is off to an All-Star-type start in 2017-18 and battled through an illness to record 20 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and six steals in Monday’s loss to the Suns. Simmons is shooting 50.3% from the floor while averaging 18 points, 9.3 rebounds, 7.1 assists and 2.3 steals. The former LSU-product came up a rebound shy of a triple-double and added five steals in the win at Los Angeles in November while Ball was held to two points on 1-of-9 shooting and two assists in 21 minutes. Robert Covington has cooled-off considerably since a hot start, shooting 29.4% from the floor over the last five games, including 12-of-47 from 3-point range.

SAINTS VS FALCONS PREDICTION

Both of these franchises are on the rise, but Philadelphia is way ahead of Los Angeles right now. This 76ers team plays very loose and have mega-talent. They will put the Phoenix loss behind them and cruise to a victory over the struggling Lakers.
