The Indiana Hoosiers will try to give coach Mike Davis a nice send-off while the San Diego State Aztecs look for the upset when the two teams meet Thursday in Salt Lake City in an NCAA first-round bout.
Indiana, a six seed, is 5-2 since Davis announced he’d be leaving the program at the end of the season. The Hoosiers responded by making a run to the Big 10 tournament semis, losing there to Ohio State 52-51 last Saturday as five-point underdogs.
San Diego State, the 11 seed, won both the Mountain West regular-season and tournament titles, and has won six games in a row. And while this is SD State’s first appearance in the Big Dance since 2002, their coach has some tournament experience. You may have heard of him; Steve Fisher, the guy who guided Michigan to six straight wins and a national championship 16 years ago.
Indiana is a pocket-picking 10-16 against the spread this season, 5-10 ats as chalk. The Aztecs, on the other hand, are 16-11 vs. the number on the season, 4-3 ats as dogs. The Hoosiers earlier this season lost to Duke and Connecticut, and beat Kentucky by 26 points. But they also shocked the faithful by falling to Indiana State. Indiana went 9-7 in the Big 10, tying with Wisconsin for fourth place.
San Diego State went 2-2 this season vs. teams that made the NCAA tournament, beating Albany, losing to Cal and splitting two games with Air Force.
Both teams are shooting 40 percent from three-point range on the season.
