I hooked up a router to my computer. How can I be sure that it is working properly? Is this a sufficient firewall? Do I still need to have anti virus software? Thanks in advance for the help, and excuse me for my ignorance.
You still need anti-virus for other types of viri (such as those that are in your e-mail or you download off of the internet). Your router/firewall will keep incoming connections that you don't want. You can setup your router to allow certian ports into your system... which is what you need most of the time if you're playing some type of PC game... but you should be set for some types of exploits.
Just keep in mind it won't block stuff you download from websites or that are sent to you in your e-mail.

I do IT consulting and always put these two items on my clients PC (home users):
AVG anti-virus (free antivirus program) - www.grisoft.com
zone alarm firewall (free firewall) - www.zonelabs.com
