Bears say they can cover Sunday's spread
Jon Campbell

The Chicago Bears have a bone to pick with oddsmakers.

Most online sportsbooks have the injury-depleted Bears slated as 6-point underdogs for Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field.

"If the consensus is that we're six points worse than Detroit, I don't think you'll find a guy in the locker room who doesn't think we're better than that, '' middle linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer told the Chicago Sun-Times.

Bears coach Lovie Smith used the newspaper to point out Sunday’s line to his players earlier in the week to show them the lack of respect they’re getting.

"That's one of the first times he's ever done that,'' Hillenmeyer said. "He's just big on the fact that we need to earn our respect around the league.”

Respect, however, won’t come easily.

Chicago’s injury report is starting to read longer than Santa’s Christmas wish list. The Bears have lost their top two quarterbacks for the season – Rex Grossman (knee) and Craig Krenzel (knee) – and linebacker Brian Urlacher sits on the injured reserve with a hamstring injury.

On Thursday the Bears learned defensive end Adewale Ogunleye will be out for the season and might need surgery on his lower right leg. Ogunleye had five sacks and 51 tackles this season and his injury leaves Chicago so thin on the defensive line, they’re calling up Alain Kashama from the practice squad just to fill the holes.

The recent injury news doesn’t have bettors convinced enough to start throwing down their money on the Lions. Detroit opened as a 6-point chalk and the line has remained steady all week.

The Lions have managed to cover the spread in four of their last five games, even though they’ve only won twice in their last 10 outings.

The Bears have failed to cover the number in four of their last five games. Chicago managed just eight points combined in its last two games in a pair of losses to Houston and Jacksonville.

Oddsmakers have the over/under set at 36 for Sunday’s game.

The Bears rank last in offense and have scored a combined eight points the past two games. They are going with their fourth quarterback, have offensive line injuries and below average wide receivers.
The key here is can the Lions put up enough points to cover the touchdown spread. I believe they can.
Kevin Jones has rushed for 711 yards the past six games, averaging 5.5 yards per carry. He has emerged as the Lions' best runner since Barry Sanders retired five years ago. The Bears rank 25th in run defense.
Lions quarterback Joey Harrington is playing for his job next year. He got a boost of confidence last week throwing for 361 yards and two touchdowns against the Vikings. He'll look to pad his stats against the Bears.
The Bears are 0-5 without star linebacker Brian Urlacher, who is out for the season. Their defense isn't nearly as good without him. They are playing with backups in the secondary and inexperienced linebackers. It's also Chicago's first game in a dome since Week 3.

I hear ya on the Skins ... decided on game day to wrap them up in a little Rounder with Carolina and New England. Was countin' my cash when the old man threw the 39 yarder to finish it. Still money ahead but, oh, what could have been ... LOL
