One of the key things I'm learning is when you should slow play the pocket pairs or when you should bet at them. Here is a poker lesson.............
two nights ago in the $25 buy in table .25 /.50 blinds NL Holdem..........I'm playing tight and I'm up to about 50 bucks(give or take)..........blinds come out and I'm holding 7's in the hole so I call to get in........three playes call then the next guy raises 2 bucks.........5 people see the 2 and go to the flop the rest fold em.........I of course stay in........flop comes out.......7S 5D 2S..........
I made my set........but I remeber the raiser and see the flush draw on the board........so I check it down.....the original raiser bets at it again but it's a low bet so now I've got him on the draw and I'm giving him credit for the ace..... so I call.......and one other guy calls........guessing he had the king spade flush draw to stay in at this point and the price is low. Sure enough the next card fly's out and it's the 10S this guy just hit his flush with the ace high........I'm the underdog at this point but he has us both on flushes so he thinks he has the nuts on us........fearing us both laying it down if he bets to high( and he's right) he throws a post oak bet out there so that we'll stay in it........I mean what is the sence of having a monster hand like that if you only walk away with a couple of bucks.......
He throws a 3 dollar bet out there which now it's three to win 17 to me if I pair the board and I know he has me on the flush so I know where I'm sitting with him........I toss in the three as a you got me but lets get lucky here bet........I have two outs a 5 and a 7 the other guy throws it in also........the river .......5S Just what I wanted to see and it couldn't be a better card for me. This guy has me on the Spade flush with a high card........So I sit back and let the time run down and then I pull the trigger because I can not be beat.........All in...........He doesn't hesitate to call thinking he's got me and the last guy throws his down because he knows one of us has the ace high spade flush..............34 bucks pluss the 17 in the pot and he never seen it coming.
Moral of the story........when your showing pocket pair study the board a bit and slow play anytime these elements present themselves.............
straight draw or flush draw when you made your set on the flop it can turn into the biggest pot of the night.........or can limit your losses when beat by either of the two.
bet at any set when the straight draw is broken up by two cards and there is no flush draw on the board.
Big money maker is the pocket pair slow play.:gulp:
