YTD 2-1 changed record after Wash St. game. Ugly but I'll take it.
South Carolina -3.5 @ Vanderbilt 12:30 ET
The Commodores ended their season 2-10 the last two years in a row. Coach Johnson has compiled a 9-12-1 ATS record over his two years as head coach and 6-2-1 ATS mark as home dogs. Last year the Gamecocks handed Vandy an 11-point defeat, however Vandy did cash for their backers as 16 pt road dogs. Vanderbilt’s ATS record after 114 SU losses is 44-67-3. On the bright side they are 26-6 ATS after their last 42 SU victories. The Commodores are bringing back 52 letterman and 21 starters from last year.
South Carolina was 2-2 ATS as road dogs last year and 5-7 ATS overall. They have had two disappointing seasons finishing 5-7 each year. They are bringing back 15 starters from last year’s squad, 9 of which come from the offense including their QB and RB's. Another thing in their favor is that after their last 68 SU victories they are 49-10 ATS. Holtz's club holds a 9-3 ATS advantage the last 12 meetings. Last year SC spotted Vandy 16, this year it's down to 3.5. I like the Gamecocks chances here, as they need to start the season strong on the road to regain their Bowl hopes.
South Carolina -3.5
Oklahoma St @ UCLA Pk 3:30 ET
The Cowboys are coming off a good season 9-4 but lost to Ole Miss by 3, 28-31 in their bowl appearance. Now Okla. St. heads west to open their season against a Bruin team that suffered 7 defeats last year including their last 5 both SU and ATS. UCLA is returning 13 starters and 36 letterman. Of that group you will see a good QB in Drew Olson who completed 53.2 pct. of his passes and just over 2000 yards. On a down note, he tossed only 10 TD's and 9 int's. The Cowboys return 18 starters and 54 letterman. That squad includes Josh Fields at QB who threw for over 2400 yards completing 54.4 pct. and 21 TD's to 12 int's. You will also see a very fast backfield lead by Vernand Morency who rushed for 918 yards. All in all, I don't see UCLA staying with the Cowboys. IMO overall team speed goes to Okla. St. and I believe they will outrun the Bruins.
Oklahoma St. Pk
N. Illinois @ Maryland -14.5 6:00 ET
Plain and simple, this is a revenge game for the Terrapins. Last year Maryland traveled to DeKalb for a prep game for the following weeks meeting with Fla St. and ran into a surprising Huskies club that shocked Friedgen and company 13-20. Maryland finished the season 10-3 and pounded W. Virginia in their Bowl appearance 41-7. N. Illinois finished the season 10-2 but were not invited to a bowl game. The Huskies are 7-1 ATS vs. non-conference teams and 1-1 ATS as road dogs last year. This year’s game will be played on grass and not artificial turf. Coach Fiedgens club is 13-1 ATS as home favorites of 7 or more points, 10-2 ATS as DD favorites and 15-3 ATS at home. Maryland will not look past the Huskies this year as they have Temple next week. Two good teams however I like Friedgen here, as they are 6-3 ATS with revenge.
Maryland -14.5
Tulsa @ Kansas -4 7:00 ET
Kansas is 3-0 ATS last 3 vs. Tulsa. They last met in '02 where the Jayhawks won by 10. Kansas is not a powerhouse but should prevail here, and the points are light.
Kansas -4
Toledo @ Minnesota -12 9:00 ET
Over the past 4 years Toledo is 4-6-1 ATS as road dogs and 7-10-1 ATS on the road under Coach Amstutz over the last 3 years. The Golden Gophers were 3-3 ATS as home favorites last year. Under Coach Mason the Gophers are 24-16 ATS as favorites. Minnesota fans love this team and will be out in force to support their boys. This week the Minnesota University students voted to raise their annual tuition by $50 to pay for a new stadium for their team. That kind of support will pay dividends this week and the entire season. The Golden Gophers win by 3 TD's.
