Clubhouse cancer cuts D-Backs deep

The Arizona Diamondbacks are in one heck of a pickle.

They’ve lost nine straight and 24 of the last 29 to fall 24 ½ games off the pace in the NL Central. They’ve dropped nearly 40 units for their supporters this year. They’re hitting just .254 as a club and have a 5.01 team ERA.

In short, Arizona’s season has been like a yearlong marathon of Groundhog Day on your local movie network.

It doesn’t look like anything’s going to get better until the clubhouse gets a makeover. Or at least until it sheds its biggest unit. That means you, Randy Johnson.



While the public finger pointing has been held to a minimum, it’s no secret that the ace of the staff has become about as popular as a nasty case of athlete’s foot in the locker room. Johnson wants out. And he wants out to wear pinstripes at Yankee Stadium. Just don’t expect the rest of the Diamondbacks to kick up much of a stink if he gets his wish.

Earlier this month, the five-time Cy Young Award winner lost it in the dugout, throwing outfielder Luis Gonzalez against a water cooler after Gonzalez misplayed a fly ball in the field. That didn’t go over well in the locker room. Gonzalez has been grinding it out, trying to play through a right elbow injury that will require Tommy John surgery next month.

And the Big Unit didn’t make any friends after he tossed his no-hitter back on May 13, either. It’s customary after a no-hitter for the pitcher to present gifts to his teammates after the no-no. Most hand out some fancy bling with fat price tags to cap off the event. Johnson opted to for a commemorative scorecard and a ticket for each of his teammates.

Now, word out of Arizona is that the 40-year-old lefty has completely closed himself off from the rest of the club and the rest of the team is just hoping that he gets dealt. It’s becoming more and more evident by the day that they would probably be better off without him. It’s not like the club’s going to be in the middle of a pennant race even if Johnson remains with the team.

He certainly didn’t sound overly upset after pitching the D-Backs to a 3-1 loss (their ninth straight) as –155 favorites on Tuesday.

"It was a great game," Johnson quipped after the game. ''It was a well-pitched game on their side and it was fun to watch. We gave them everything we had and the game wasn't over until the last out, which was real good.

"Everybody went out and battled and we put ourselves in situations to win the ballgame, and they had to make the pitches and they did."

The D-Backs haven’t put up much of a fight during the nine-game slide. They’ve scored three or more runs just once over the slump. With Casey Fossum taking the hill Thursday against the Houston Astros, Arizona will probably need to put up a few runs to help out its lefty.

Fossum is working on a 7.16 ERA over his last three outings and the club is just 2-11 with him on the mound.

Roy Oswalt, who is 2-8 with a 6.08 ERA, gets the call for Houston.
