I know it's been mentioned before and a lot of people have it in the back of their head, but I just thought we can have a discussion on it.
Looking at the end of tonights game, which has ended in similar fashion to a lot of playoff games thus so-far this year, it seems to me as if the idea that the game to a CERTAIN degree is fixed may actually have some merit.
The angles of the possible fix I believe may be involved in officiating, and POSSIBILY with the players. Now I think the players play for themselves and their team for the most part, however, perhaps at crunch time down the stretch when they know they are done with the inevitable L, perhaps it COULD be possible teams are told to at least go for the push or beat the spread if the public is on the other team OR at the very least affect the score spread results.
My theory is, I don't believe the outcome of games are predecided or fixed beforehand... I do believe at least, both teams are allowed to play to win, however, as I said, I think it MAY be possible a certain degree of the game is fixed.
FOR example: The Twolves were 8 point favorites @ LA for game 4. The books had JUST lost a whole bunch on the last game, and weren't about to lose again. The public was ALL over LA both times, and this time around in game 4 minny was down 11 with a few seconds left. Obviously they knew they were beat. Jack Nicholson was right in asking KG why he put up that 3, which BY THE WAY, the Lakers just let him have totally uncontested.
AGAIN, game 6, they were 8 point favorites, public taking the Lakers again. Down 9 with 2 seconds left, Fred Hoiberg tosses up a 3 to make the cover. Coincidence? I don't know...
Now tonight of course the public was on the under & LA. Detroit obviously had this one in the bag at the end, however with the 10 point lead at the very end the Lakers still put up the 3 at the end (can't always make them), and then try very hard to make the last basket, which they ended up getting? WHY? It makes no sense to me, they DO know it wouldn't make ANY difference. This is where the questionable part of the game comes into play if you ask me.
There have been a lot of examples of this, for instance in the Indiana Detroit series as well, however I will leave it at that.
Now I'm not saying the NBA is totally fixed, I'm just saying it's very possible, and I wouldn't be surprised. Now what are all of your thoughts?
