Holy shit Rothko- I see you in a whole new light now, great f-ing choices! Lol. But seriously, you've got some good taste, althought I prefer Doolittle to Trompe.

05-13-2004, 05:53 PM
Ute...you mean my pics don't bring you the same kind of light????
Just kidding, bro! Yeah, I love Doolittle, but something about that spacy-cosmic sound of Trompe...plus the kick-ass cover of Jesus and The Mary chain's "head on" just leaves me numb!
Man, I could talk music all day and night...I can't say enough about ASTRAL WEEKS...it would do everyone some good to pick this album up!!! Just a mesmerizing sound...his voice could pass as an actual instrument! This album had the most profound effect on me in terms of lyrics and song arrangements!
A good read...If you can find a copy of Lester Banggs "Carburetor Dung" book(which is a collection of his more famous music reviews)...you will find an incredible review of Astral Weeks! It reads like american literature...needless to say, Lester was a big fan of the album. The review stretches over 6-8 pages. Incredible!!
Oh yeah...if any of you guys are Wilco fans!!!...I have a copy of the new album, "A ghost is born" already in my hands. And let me tell you...it sounds incredible!!!!

Wilco too...Rothko, I may start tailing your picks on principle alone, your musical tastes are eclectic and right on; but I'm all over the spectrum of music: punk, alt, indie, some metal, the good hip hop, etc. etc.. Maybe I'll try and compile a few albums I think are spot on.

Ditto to Queen's Frampton, Ditto to Thor's Hotel California,
Ditto to all Van Morrison. Throw in a little Pink Floyd. A dose of
U-2 and some of John Prine's wonderful lyrics. Maybe a little
Bob Marley. Long live Stevie Ray Vaughan and pass me a little
Eric Clapton while you are playing me some Stones and
Aerosmith.
Just think of all the music we have missed since the early departure of so many greats. Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Holly,
John Lennon and the list goes on..................

Ute....or anyone for that matter...I'll be happy to send anyone a burned CD of anything I've mentioned so far...within the rules of the forum, of course...if there is a way for me to send a burned CD of anything I've mentioned...I'll be more than happy!!! Just let me know!!!!
Yeah Ute...the new Wilco has that Neil young guitar (circa Zuma, Freedom...) and plenty of piano, soft acoustic...whispered vocals...just unbelievable!!!! It's been in my CD player since I got my hands on it!!!!
Rooster...can anything beat the first John Prine album???? He should be in the hall of fame alone for "Sam Stone." As far as debut albums are concerned....that is definately one of the best!!!! My girlfriend got me his boxset for Christmas a couple of years ago!!!!

Rothko holy shit. Sam Stone is the song of my life. I could tell you
why, but Kevin would kick me off UC for the novel I wrote. I had
not played Van for a while till I read your post. I straight away
put in No Method, No Guru, No Teacher. You are one cool brother
for the music you dig. Peace !
My wife had John Prine on the plane (flight attendant) and told him her husband loved to play him, especially Sam Stone. It was veterans day and, she made the anouncement on landing, "Thanks for flying USAIR, and please hug a veteran". He autographed his ticket on the way out and gave it to her with a hug for the anouncement.

This is what I'm into lately....I guess you can call it mood music because there are no vocals. I read a review of one of these albums and the guy described it as "musical landscapes." I don't know anything about that....but the music does take you to a different level. Kind of like meditation...
1. Sigur Ros - ()
2. Mum - Finally we are noone
3. Explosions in the sky - Earth is not a cold dead place
4. Godpeed you! Black emperor - Yanqui U.X.O.
5. Mogwai [EP+2]

I'd LOVE a copy of the new Wilco album if you'd be so kind as to send me one, Rothco.
My first love has always been music, followed very closely by gambling, of course...LOL.
Saw John Prine last spring in Cedar Rapids for the 3rd time on my life, just a great, great show as always. Neil Young was just in town in March doing his "Greendale" album which was pretty cool...then he played an additional 1.5 hrs of old stuff, making it a non-stop 2 hr and 50 minute long show, well worth the 60 bucks a ticket....
No mention of one of my all-time favorites in this thread yet. John Hiatt. Saw him in a solo, accoustical set here in town in Early 2002, outstanding. He really blew my mind back in 92 or 93 when he was in town with his band, the Goners. What a fantastic show...you haven't lived until you have seen Hiatt and the Goners do "I'll have the usual" live......:yeah:
As a nod to Nick Hornsby and his phantastic book(and movie aboption staring John Cusack)-- my Top 5 all-time favorite albums.
1. "Let It Be" The Replacements
2. "Raw Power" Iggy Pop and the Stooges
3. "Tonights the Night" Neil Young
4. "Slowhand" Eric Clapton
5. "Slow Turning" John Haitt
Probably not my top 5 of all time, but when you are trying to think of them while sitting in front of the computer screen it gets tough. When you own over 3,000 LPs and 500 CDs, its really hard to recall all the titles in your collection no matter what the situation.
Great thread and great to see a few of you have some eclectic tastes...

Queen, thats just what it is rap-crap, and it goes to show you how messed up the kids are these days listening to that shit. Pure Trash, when they start talking about killing policemen and raping and what have you, don't these kids understand what this world would be without police????? It's turning out to be a sad world, I don't watch the news anymore it's all the same shit, killings and drugs and most of it's related.
Queen, The Monster Mash was sang by Bobby "Boris" Pickett, if I am not mistaken he wrote the song also!!!

DeadG.....Man, thanks for reminding me of "Exile on Mainstreet."
I can't believe I left that off my list....
My first summer at UGA...I lived off this album...I was 20 yrs old and consuming everything I could get my hands on...
Some of the most beautiful girls you will ever see....
This album may be the second most significant recording in all music....behind "Astral Weeks", of course!!!
Roth....I was a consumer myself at that time.....would do it all over again and not change a thing.....

Yeah DeadG....I wouldn't trade anything for those days!!! Just happy I was always broke at the time....you know how fun times can soon become a habit. I was always a fan of excess...
BST...I was at UGA btween 1990 and 1993!
I stayed in the senior dorms before going to Russell....
Rockfish Palace, Globe, O'Malley's, 40 watt.....those were my haunts of choice!!!
I met and had a 30 minute conversation with Peter Buck(REM) in a booth at Allen's (located in Normaltown) while watching The Normaltown Flyers. He always played guitar with them when he was in town. I was sitting alone having my umpteenth beer of the night and he came over...sat down...said hi...and wanted to know what I thought about The Flyers. I sat there frozen and probably said something incoherent and stupid...and then I finally asked him what their new album is going to sound like....he said, while making a guitar motion with his fingers, "It's real quiet...alot of mandolins and strings...everyone will probably hate it."
Well, it was only their top selling album to date...OUT OF TIME!!!
So many great memories of that place!!

YUDY'S AND BAR NEXT TO IT, MURPHY'S, WERE OWNED BY MY UNCLE. REM AND THE B'52S BOTH PLAYED AT HIS PLACE PRIOR TO MAKING IT BIG TIME. GREAT PARTY TOWN WITH SOME FUN SOUTHERN BELLS!! I SPENT A SUMMER DOWN THERE AND HAD A BLAST.
this thread had me thinking last night and i started pouring over my music collection and came up with a few more that would be what i consider classic albums....
Beatles......White Album, Rubber Soul and Revolver
Neil Young.....Harvest
Zeppelin.....IV
The Who....Who's Next
Stones.....Goats Head Soup
Little Feat.....Waiting For Columbus.....I believe this is the best live rock and roll album ever made.....
Dylan....Blood on the Tracks, Blonde on Blonde and Highway 61 Revisited
Yes.....Fragile
Any lover of classic rock should have all of these in their collection.....and if the hip hop lovers out there would listen to these I think they would have a revelation.....its a shame the good ole Grateful Dead never took to the studio like others but their live performances are what we lived for anyway....."their not the best at what they do....they are the only one's that do what they do." So true.....
Rothko1000

DeadG...."Blood on the Tracks" just gives me goosebumps....
"Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" is still my favorite..."Girl from the North Country" is still incredibly moving!!!
I'd love to have a peek at your collection...best to you!!!
good tunes Roth.....I have so much damn music and its a shame but I rarely listen to it anymore.....first of all 70% of my music that isnt Dead related is on vinyl.....my wife and I have carried around our 2 tons of record albums through 3 moves now......and I am a bigot as still listen to Grateful Dead 95% of the time.....I am a creature of habit in all respects and music is no exception......keep listening.....
