Oliver Perez is the real deal. He was acquired by the Pirates in the Brian Giles deal last season. Perez has had mixed success so far in the majors. He's been brilliant at times and he's been downright awful at times. He's got nasty stuff and can pile on the strikeouts. This season he's been a model for consistency through his first three starts. He enters with a 2-0 record (team is 3-0 in his starts) with a 1.74 ERA and a .92 WHIP with 22 K's 4BB and just 14 hits in 20 2/3 innings pitched. He is averaging a strikeout an inning and less then 1 baserunner an innning. Mix the good pitching in with the fact that Milwaukee who is 1-0 on the year vs lefty's is hitting .185 Overall vs lefty's, .152 at home and .183 in the last 10. There a few things that do worry me in this game. For starters Pittsburgh his one of the best hitting teams in the NL with a .280 average but yet they are near the bottom in runs scored with just over 4 a game. They are leaving tons of runners on base. I don't think that will be a huge problem today though. The Pirates are facing Wes Obermueller. Obermueller had success in his lone start last year vs the Pirates posting a 1.50 ERA and the team won the game in his start. This year it's been an up and down year for OB. He pitched a GEM vs the Giants winning 3-0 but he's had 2 other rocky starts getting shelled vs Houston and Arizona. One trend which is also a bit nerve racking is that Milwaukee is 5-2 in game 2 of a series while Pittsburgh enters 1-6 in Game 2. I hope that trend bucks today. I'll ride the better pitcher.
