Thought It should be about time to make a Pre- Season thread for Australian Football. After seeing a sportbook is offering Odds on the Essendon v Aboriginal All Stars game.

Basically the Pre Season is like a tournament for all 16 teams - Different to the NFL Pre Season. The winner gets a cup and cash as well. But usually there is a stigma that the winner of the Pre Season usually dosnt win the big cup.

Anyway this game is just a friendly.

Australian Rules - Aboriginal All Stars v Essendon

5 * Aboriginal All Stars v Essendon - Aboriginal All Stars to win @ $1.35

Basically Essendon are without some key players, will be interesting to see how some of the players will adapt to the heat of Darwin. Essendons key full-forward is out and most of the players who are key to Essendon wont play too much. I look for the Aboriginals too show an impressive showing in front of a big crowd of supporters.

Any Questions, Comments are welcome..

Good Luck Everyone

Btw - I'm starting with smaller units than I usually would.

Yeah been from Melbourne - Its expected from birth that you love your Aussie Rules. I'm a huge Essendon fan as well but thats mainly due to the effects of growing up in Essendon.

2007 NAB Cup - Round 1

Footy is back tomorrow and I'm looking forward to it there are two games on. First we have Port Adelaide v Adelaide and after that we have Kangaroos v Collingwood. Here are my thoughts of the games.

Port Adelaide v Adelaide

Odds are even for this match and they should be Adelaide is the favorite to win but I doubt they will win this game. I think Adelaide will be focused on bigger and better things, whereas Port has named a decent squad. I think they will take the game but it wont be by much I'll wait and see if any lines come up before I throw in any plays here.

Kangaroos v Collingwood

I think the Kangaroos will win this one quite well they have been in a big preseason this year. Lots of fitness training will help out this team and not to mention they have named quite a big named squad with most of their first team players named in the squad. Furthermore they are looking to impress supporters at their new 'semi' home ground in the Gold Coast. Collingwood have named a squad of new faces and rookies. Not many big names mentioned and I think it will show as the Kangaroos will get the win here. They will do it well. The odds here show it as well - Kangaroos at $1.26.

I'll most likely post my picks tomorrow afternoon when i get more details on both games. But at the moment I'm leaning to Port Adelaide and the Kangaroos.

Yeah good ole' Footscray would be my 2nd Favourite team. They are one of the more exciting teams in the AFL today. I think their a good chance to get in deep into the finals.

Ok odds have changed slightly leading up to these matches.

4 * Port Adelaide v Adelaide - Port Adelaide to win @ $1.87

Like I mentioned Port will be playing more serious in this match and be looking for a good win.

5 * Kangaroos v Collingwood - Kangaroos to win @ $1.24

I dont want to play the line here as I believe +23.5 is too big of a line - thats 4 goals and I dont really expect the Kanga's to cover that 23.5 line. But on the same token I dont want to get carried away and play Collingwood with the +23.5. I expect the winning margin to be around 18 points and under. (but with the NAB cup rules of a Super Goal being 9 points it can be a bit unpredictable to call who will win)

Kangaroos looks they will get the win its just past Half Time and they are looking pretty good. Once that game is done I'll do quick write ups of what I think about Saturday's Cup games.

It was a good day with the Friday Night Games. Tomorrow there are 3 matches here they are.

Western Bulldogs v Sydney Swans @ Manuka Oval, Canberra

Sydney are last years runner's up in the Premiership. Bulldogs are one of the hardest running teams in the competition. Both teams have a good enough squad of players in it will be interesting to see how Aker plays as well as a few others. Sydney have quite a few injuries and their list dosnt have the big enough talent as I see in the Bulldogs lineup. I tend to have a bit of lean to the Bulldogs but I will not be putting anything on this game as I dont like the idea of putting money on a game I'm not sure of that is at $1.27 - also I'm not that convinced the Swans will do much with out Hall up forward and most of the NAB Cup rules seem to go against the normal swans start and go style of play. Would say the Bulldogs - if I see the line favourable I might play it.

Essendon Bombers v Carlton Blues @ Telstra Dome, Melbourne

I would love to go to this match butr unfortantly I am working. These two teams finished on the bottom of the ladder last season. The last game they played resulted in a draw - but I doubt that will happen this week. The Essendon squad looks deadly with a lot of big names named Hird, Watson, Llyod, Fletcher, Laycock and a numerous amount of other names. Carltons squad looks pretty good as well. But after seeing Essendon play so well against the Aboriginal All Stars I cant help but not put money behind them here. The bookies have them at $1.47 at the moment and I'll be glad to take that.

St Kilda Saints v Brisbane Lions @ Cazaly Stadium, Cairns

Bookies currently have the Saints as the favourites here and it is for good reason after the Saints beat the Lions at the Gabba (Brisbane) last season by a large amount. Saints are with a new coach though so they will be looking to check out the youngsters. Both teams have injury concerns - but in a competition like this and with the injury concerns of both teams I like the Lions, mainly due to the home crowd and also the weather conditions could have trouble on the team that has travelled. The odds for Brisbane at the moment are at $1.97 - I'll wait till tomorrow to make my decision on this game - hoping to get some more info out of the teams to be used tomorrow.

....

5 * Essendon Bombers v Carlton Blues - Essendon Bombers to win @ $1.47

That will be good dan hopefully we can cash on some winners this year.

2007 NAB Cup - Round 1

3 * Brisbane Lions v St Kilda Saints - Brisbane Lions to win @ $1.90

Odds have dropped here pretty much even money on these two. Brisbane has the edge I feel and I believe their youngsters will show up and push for selection into the firsts.

2007 NAB Cup - Round 1

Geelong Cats v Richmond Tigers @ Skilled Stadium, Geelong

Geelong won the NAB Cup last year - and went on to have a dissapointing year to say the least not even making the finals. I feel that Geelong will easily take this game from the Tigers who will be in some trouble up front. They have quite a few injuries in Richmond as well with Kane Johnson out of the squad, Troy Simmonds & Mark Coughlan. Furthermore Geelong has been pretty good in the preseason with the club undergoing an extensive check to see the problems of the underachieving team. I believe the extensive fitness training over the summer will play dividends here for the Cats. Also playing away at Skilled Stadium is a hard task and is pretty hard to come away from Geelong with the win.

Melbourne Demons v Hawthorn Hawks @ Telstra Dome, Melbourne

This is a tough game to call, both sides have named two strong sides - with a few big names out for Melbourne it is Travis Johnstone, Brock McLean (their main ball-getters) for Hawthorn it is Jacobs, Smith and Croad (Biggest names out key players). Hawks are currently the favourite, but to be honest I think $1.75 is a bit too low of a price. I think this will go down to the wire - I think a fade to Melbourne could be good but would need to think about it a bit more. I'll wait to see the price in the morn.

Fremantle Dockers v West Coast Eagles @ Subiaco, Perth

West Coast won the premiership last year and Fremantle were the only team to beat West Coast twice last year. West Coast is looking to leave a lot of key players out of their team - Kerr and Judd (Two of the best players in the competition) Dockers have named quite a strong squad to verse the Eagles - however I dont like the odds here as they are too low to play Dockers are at $1.35. I see the Eagles as a chance to steal a win over them. But I wouldnt be so keen to place money on it - I'll wait till I see the squad finalised tomorrow.

2007 NAB Cup Round 1

I couldn't help myself with the Geelong game.

5 * Geelong Cats v Richmond Tigers - Geelong Cats to win @ $1.38

Also.. saw the line just open up for Melbourne v Hawthorn at +8.5 I like this line for Melbourne but will look a bit more into it before deciding what to do.

2007 NAB Cup - Round 2

Western Bulldogs v Brisbane Lions @ Telstra Dome, Melbourne

This is an interesting game I think the Doggies will win easily here the line is set at -29.5 however for the doggies. I think they could cover this line today. Brisbane are coming from up north of the country to the south it is a long trip to make. Conditions would have taken their toll on the Lions as they played in extremely wet conditions. The Doggies however played very well in Canberra against the Swans. The Dogs will be without a few big names who played last week - but the Lions arent that good either - Simon Black basically took the team on his shoulders and was able to carry them to a win against the Saints. I think the conditions of last week will affect the Lions tonight and they will be a bit slow.

Pick: 3 * Western Bulldogs v Brisbane Lions - Western Bulldogs to win with Line of -29.5 @ $1.90

2007 NAB Cup - Round 2

10 * Hawthorn v Carlton - Hawthorn to win @ $1.57

Hawthorn looked pretty good in the last half against the Demons. Carlton wasnt too good in that last quarter against Essendon they had a huge lead and the Bombers bought it back. Furthermore this game is going to played in Launceston, Tasmania. A Venue most of the Carlton players have no idea about ( actually all excluding Ackland) - Just looking at these two teams last weekend it is easy to see why I'm siding with Hawthorn.

Good Luck.
