Wonk....here's a wrapup from the Eastern Michigan game and some pre-game notes for the Toledo matchup on Tuesday!
Kent State University exploded for 46 first-half points on its way to a fifth straight victory, 82-46, over Eastern Michigan. The Golden Flashes (14-8, 7-2 MAC) scored 36 points in a ten minute span in the first half and took control of the game with 12-0 and 14-5 runs and beat the Eagles (8-14, 3-6 MAC) for the 11th consecutive time. The Flashes shot 56 percent from the field overall while holding its third straight opponent to under 50 points defensively.
The Flashes built the lead to as big as 38 points with 12:07 and then closed out the game on a 8-0 run. Freshman guard Chris Singletary led four Flashes in double figures with a career-high 16 points, going five-of-seven from the field, with a pair of three-pointers, and four-of-four from the foul line. Gates finished with 12 points, all in the first half, as did senior guard Omni Smith and sophomore forward/center Julian Sullinger. Junior forward Haminn Quaintance pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.
Kent State was 28-of-50 overall from the field, including eight-of-13 (61.5%) from three-point range. The Flashes also connected on 18-of-25 free throws (72%).
Following one of its most dominating performances of the season, the Kent State University men’s basketball teams puts its five-game winning streak on the line against MAC West Division-leading Toledo in a rematch of the 2006 MAC Tournament championship game.
• Toledo (12-9, 8-1 MAC) rebounded from its first conference loss with a 64-48 win at home Saturday night against arch-rival Bowling Green State University. The Rockets lead the MAC West by three full games and also have won eight-of-nine, after losing its last three games of the 2006 calendar year.
KSU and Toledo last met in the 2006 FirstEnergy MAC Tournament title game Mar. 11, a 71-66 victory by the Golden Flashes that sent them to the NCAA Tournament. This is the 117th meeting between Kent State and Toledo. The Flashes have won seven of the last nine matchups- including two of three last year- but Toledo has a commanding lead in the all-time series, 77-39. The Rockets are 30-25 all-time in Kent, but KSU has won the last three on its home floor.
• The Rockets are 30-25 all-time in Kent, but the Flashes have won two straight at the M.A.C. Center.
• The two teams met three times last year, splitting the regular season by winning on each’s home court. Kent State won the first matchup, 76-68 and Toledo picked up a 60-44 win. The Flashes then won the rubber match- and the MAC Championship- with a 71-66 win in the MAC Tournament final.
• Since 2000, the Flashes have won seven of the 10 meetings, going 3-1 at home and 2-0 at neutral sites. Kent State head coach Jim Christian is 4-2 against the Rockets while Toledo head man Stan Joplin has a 4-10 mark versus the Flashes.
FLASHES LOOK TO EXTEND 20-WIN AND POSTSEASON STREAK TO NINE
• Kent State has posted concurrent streaks of 20-wins or more and postseason appearances for the last eight years.
• The Golden Flashes have appeared in four NCAA Tournaments, including last season, and four NIT’s during the current postseason streak.
• Christian is just the second coach in Kent State history to win 100 games with the Golden Flashes. Jim McDonald (1982-92) is the school’s winningest coach with 148 victories.
OPPONENTS SCORING LIMIT IS 50
• In each of the last three games, Kent State has held its opponent to below 50 points, including a season-low 45 by Central Michigan (Jan. 31).
• On the season, the Flashes have held six opponents below 50, the most in a single season since the 1949-50 season (eight).
GETTING DEFENSIVE
• In conference play, the Flashes are allowing just 57.7 points per game, tops in the MAC. They are second in field goal percentage in league-only games at .409 and in steals at 9.6.
• During the team’s five-game winning streak, those numbers are 51.0, .385 and 10.0, respectively.
• In the latest NCAA Division I rankings (Feb. 1), Kent State was ranked 49th nationally in scoring defense (62.6). Since that time, the Flashes’ average has dropped to 61.8.
FLASHES vs. the MAC
Since the 1998 season Kent is 114-39 in MAC conference play for a 74.5% winning percentage!

Wonk...the West is absolutely the worst this year....I think the Flashes will beat Toledo but it should be relatively close. Probably one of those 3-5 pt. ball games but it wouldn't surprise me if they won by 10! The way the freshmen have been playing lately is awesome, and to be able to have Omni Smith coming off the bench sure is a luxury. Jordan Mincy started at the point and had 8 of Kent's 22 assists for the game vs. EMU. Q played 27 mins. on Saturday and had 9 rebounds, and 6'10" Brandon Parks even played about 20 mins....he's the guy who told Coach Christian he was going to transfer and Christian told him he would have to practice but wasn't going to play at all in order to keep his scholarship for the year....Parks even scored 8 points too! They're hot right now and on the road Saturday at Western Michigan, have won 5 straight, the last 3 very convincingly.....
