Just wanted to start a thread to see what everybody thinks about the newcomers to the college hoops world...

Who do you think is gonna make an immediate impact on their team.

I'll start it off here:

Mike Cook, Transfer from East Carolina, GUARD PITT

Cook can play. I think he is the X Factor this year for a Panther Team with high expectations. Named to the C-USA all freshman team in 03 and as a sophomore at ECU averaged a team high 15 pts a game while pitching in with 4 rebs, and 3 assists per contest.

Georgetown Freshman
Vernon Macklin

Big Athletic Forward who can run the floor. I saw him in the Jordan Classic and he was impressive.

If he plays... He might be serviceable, haha.

It's great to have all these talented kids in college, and hopefully some of them realize they aren't as good as everyone is telling them that they are and they stay for more than 1 year. For some guys, it's an unnecessary wait for another year, but those guys are few and far bewteen (Oden and Durant this year come to mind).

IMO, the kids I like this year to shine are Thaddeus Young for Georgia Tech and Chase Buddinger from Arizona.

Obiovusly, I hope Paul Harris of Syracuse is the best, hahaha!!!!

Caracter and Sosa both freshman

They played Georgetown,Kentucky (NAIA Power) in an exhibition game

Barely beat them , the score was something like 96-94

Caracter -25 pts .. Big , 6'9", Forward
Sosa -15 pts..PG

They should be big contributors for LOUISVILLE this year ...

Oden will be sitting out the first portion of the season with an injury won't he?

My pick is 6-9 forward Kevin Durant from Texas.

Also I like Chase Budinger, the kid from Arizona that was the #1 volleyball player in the nation but turned down a future as an olympian to play college hoops.

Durant is a good pick...I'll throw out a couple more Big Twelve guys....

FRESHMAN
Sharrod Collins, G, Kansas

FRESHMAN
Darrell Arthur, F, Kansas

these guys are sick, absolutely sick

Forget about Pollard and Vaughn. Forget about Pierce and LaFrentz. Forget about Boschee, Miles, Hinrich, Langford, Gooden, Simien, and Collison.

This is the most loaded team Kansas has EVER had.

Haha that was just a couple years before my time as I was probably still in diapers that year, but yes "Danny Manning and the Miracles" won the National Championship in 1988. They were a low seed though, and all they had was Manning.

Billy Gillespie has done one hell of a job in College Station.

Highest Preseason Ranking ever in the AP Poll

Solid Nucleus Returns (4 of 5 starters)

AND HE IS RECRUITING TEXAS

Bryan Beasley -6'0" guard should contribute this year as a true freshman. Top 10 player in Texas coming out of High School

Bryan Davis -6'9" Forward also very highly rated player coming out of high school

and Jerrod Johnson (6'6") who plays on the football team (qb) intends to play basketball for Gillespie this year. Johnson was widely considered the top 2-Sport Athlete in the state of texas.

Nice game to open his career as a Longhorn.

20 pts , 6 rebs

That is a young , athletic basketball team

They remind me of Kansas last year a little bit

Utah was the only MWC team to land a top 100 recruit and they landed two for the 06-07 season

Daniel Dean - 6'8" Forward was Utah's Mr. Basketball
Curtis Eatmon -6'3" very athletic guard

Look for these two to play more significant roles later on.

Not trying to be a homer here....will only talk about what I have first hand knowledge of....so, I'll go with a couple of Xavier guys.

PG Drew Lavender -- X had Dedrick Finn at PG last year until he was booted off the team for being a bad seed. X finished the season with Johnny Wolf at PG. While they won 4 games in 4 days in the A10 tourney and gave the Zags all they wanted in the first round last year, Wolf will be taking a back seat to Lavender this year. Lavender was a McDonald's All American and had some pretty solid stats for Oklahoma before he decided to transfer to X. With solid offensive players like Stanley Burrell, Justin Cage, and Justin Doellman, Lavender should be able to step right in and make a huge contribution running X's offense with efficiency. Lavender is lightning quick and distributes the ball well. When left alone, he can also knock down the outside jumper. His strengths will be defense and dribble penetration.

SF Derrick Brown -- This 6'7" redshirt freshman really caught my eye in X's opener against Coastal Carolina. He is extremely athletic and has a huge wingspan. He is already being compared to James Posey. This is a perfect year for Brown to make an impact as Xavier's other starters will be keyed on offensively. This should open Brown up to getting open looks and offensive rebounds. He isn't the type of player that will be the focal point of the offense....but he should be able to excel as a role player ala Justin Doellman his freshman year when X went to the Elite 8.

Xavier is in the Paradise Jam Tourney this weekend. We'll see how X compares to other Big 6 teams in the tourney like Villanova, Iowa and Alabama. A good showing should vault the Musketeers into the Top 25.

From out West:

Chase Budinger F, Arizona - Kid is a real stud, most likely one and done. Top high school volleyball player (he can jump!) decided to play basketball over VB ($$$, obviously). First game at home for Arizona - 32 points, 11-15 FG, 5-6 3pt, 7 rebs. Lute Olson calls him his best freshman ever, and says he's the Sean Elliott of the current team. Reportedly been told to 'take over' the offense, on a team that includes some great scorers in Marcus Williams, Jawaan McClellan. Tall, freakishly athletic kid who can really shoot - Think Andre Iguodala with a J. p.s. Watch out for my Wildcats!

Tajuan Porter G, Oregon - This guy is 5'6 (some say thats even a stretch) and is averaging 31 points in Oregon's first 3 games. Havn't seen him play but supposedly can really shoot.

GMoney, you guys got a good one with Budinger. He hasn't wasted any time getting his name out there and is the best scorer on that team now as a freshman. A sure fire Lottery pick after the season.

GMoney - When did Jawaan McClellan become a "great" scorer? I missed when he even became a "good" scorer, nevermind a "great" one. The guy averaged 4.0ppg last year.

It will be interesting to see how mnay "1 and Done" players there are now with this new rule and how it affects/cripples program's upon their departures. Durant and Oden are the obvious examples this year with Budinger, Cook, Harris etc all itching to leave to aswell I'm sure.

McClellan has been killed by injuries and ineligibility his whole career at Arizona, including a pretty bad wrist injury last year which I believe he played a game and a half of. 7-7 last night from 3pt range in Arizona's win. He can definitely score.

Willie I think thats a great line, wish I would have seen that. The Cats can score, and if they learn to play some defense they will be awefully tough. We're lacking a 'killer instinct' as well as in all of our games have built 20 point leads and let the other teams hang around and get back into the game. And with Virginia we did more than let them back in the game (after being up 19) they took it away from us.

Lute always schedules the tough ones for us as Illinios, Louisville, and North Carolina are on the non conference schedule. Combined with UCLA, Washington and Oregon in the Pac Arizona will be battle tested come tourney time.

Wow, Wisky at 30-1 is a steal as well. I see them as the class of the B-10 this year if they can get past OSU.

tomorrow 21st

Been Reading about this transfer from Jax Univ that Kent Landed

He is supposed to be a real good player

Hammin Quaintance 6'7" Forward

They describe him as Athletic,Aggressive, and Explosive

At Jax Univ

Was a two-time All-Atlantic Sun performer .....Led the team in scoring, rebounding, blocks and steals each of two seasons ..... As freshman, was named the Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year .... Over two years, started all but two games in which he has played, scoring 766 points (13.9 ppg) and grabbing 487 (8.9 rpg) rebounds

Watch out for him

Kent was picked to finish third in East Division of the MAC

I like them tomorrow over Temple who has yet to play a game

....

williwonka05
