Math 1950-2006

Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter girl took my $2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she hailed the manager for help. While he tried to explain the transaction to her, she stood there and cried. Why do I tell you this?

Because of the evolution in teaching math since the 1950s:

1. Teaching Math In 1950

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit?

2. Teaching Math In 1960

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit?

3 Teaching Math In 1970

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80. Did he make a profit?

4. Teaching Math In 1980

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80 and his profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20.

5 Teaching Math In 1990

A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of $20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes? (There are no wrong answers.)
6. Teaching Math In 2006

Un hachero vende una carretada de maderapara $100. El costo de la producciones es $80. Cuanto dinero ha hecho?

So true dude.

I was at Fred Meyers today (Krogers to many of you east coasters) and was buying my kid an xbox.

The guy said do you want the new xbox or the xbox360. I said whats the diff? He went on to tell me then he noted that the old games dont work with the new console.

I was like you gotta be shittin me? Xbox is a really new thing isnt it. He's like yeah. I said that really sucks. Their ripping off their clients. He said yeah, thats just what people expect these days and they will still buy when the new products come out.

Everything is a ripoff these days. Everything is overstated, cheesey and fucking stupid.

I cant believe what the world has come to.

That girl will only have to worry about this for a few more years until we are all implanted with individual microchips used to track/charge all of our purchases, thus making any form of currency completely useless.

We make a lot of mistakes.

I remember way back when, when I was a kid working at Burger King. We counted change the old-fashioned way all the time until the new more sophisticated computer registers came along and they would do it all for you. That's part of the problem by the way, some of the registers pretty much force you to punch in the money the customer gives you and tells you the change, but if the customer gives you that last minute change, without practice, a person is really stumped. I remember for some reason that on Drive-thru, you had to be able to count back change the old fashioned way because it was rung up 5 customers ago and so the computer register wasn't there when you took the money. There was one adult lady, very unskilled, admittedly slow, who just couldn't work drive thru because she couldn't do this, if a customer gave her a nickel she had no idea what that meant. I didn't usually work in the daytime but was this day for some reason, and they told me about this. It took me about 3 minutes to show her how to do it. You can't imagine how happy she was, she lost the stigma of being the dumb person who couldn't figure this out.

We let people become teachers who have no business being teachers. They WANT to be teachers, but they don't possess the "skill set" that makes someone a good teacher. We have bought into the idea that to be a good teacher, you have to have a degree in education. That's so laughable it's absurd. Skill number 1 needs to be that you have a personality such that, when you walk into a classroom, the kids KNOW you are not messin around and it's time to shut the hell up and listen OR ELSE. From there there are other issues of course but we let Walter Wimpy get a bachelors in education and throw him into a school where the kids will eat him alive and of course that's why most teachers give up after 5 years. So much for the 4 years studying the art of teaching. (Bush tried to get legislation to stop this requirement of a degree in education but it went nowhere of course).
