Michigan might be without Manningham vs. Penn State

October 9, 2006

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- Michigan could be without its top offensive threat when it visits Penn State this weekend.

Wide receiver Mario Manningham, who leads the fourth-ranked Wolverines (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten) and the conference with 527 yards and nine touchdowns, is questionable for Saturday's game against the Nittany Lions (4-2, 2-1).

Manningham appeared to injure his knee during Michigan's 31-13 victory over Michigan State on Saturday. On Monday, Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr wouldn't confirm whether Manningham had been injured.

"I don't have any comment on Mario," Carr said. "I'm sure you understand, because I don't know everything there is to know. At some point, I will."

He did, however, say that if Manningham can't be on the field, freshmen Greg Mathews will be counted on to make plays.

"I think Greg Mathews has really done a great job up to this part of the season, and we feel confident in his ability from the first game," Carr said. "That's why we played him early. I think we anticipated at some point that his role would increase."

The game will be the 12th meeting between the schools, with Michigan holding an 8-3 series advantage. The last time the Wolverines played at Beaver Stadium was five years ago in a game they won 20-0.

Michigan handed the Nittany Lions their only loss a year ago when Pennsylvania native Chad Henne threw a scoring pass to Manningham in the end zone as time expired in Ann Arbor. Carr, 7-2 lifetime against Penn State, said Beaver Stadium is a tough place to win.

"I'm very impressed with this Penn State team," Carr said. "They have more speed at the skill positions than anybody we've played this year. Offensively they give you a lot of problems and they are equally as good defensively. We have to go back on the road and play our best game."

Injured UCLA QB Olson out four to six weeks

By BETH HARRIS, AP Sports Writer
October 9, 2006

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Ben Olson waited nearly five years to become a starting college quarterback. Now, the 23-year-old UCLA sophomore will miss the toughest portion of the Bruins' schedule because of a knee injury.

Olson sprained his knee in the first quarter of Saturday's 27-7 victory over Arizona at the Rose Bowl when his left leg was rolled on after a pass.

He had an MRI on Monday, which showed a torn medial collateral ligament. Olson will be sidelined four to six weeks, UCLA spokesman Marc Dellins said.

Earlier Monday, coach Karl Dorrell had said Olson wouldn't play this week.

Patrick Cowan, effective after Olson went out, will get his first start Saturday when the Bruins visit No. 18 Oregon.

"It's unfortunate it had to happen like this," Cowan said following the Arizona game.

The Bruins (4-1, 2-1 Pac-10) and Ducks (4-1, 2-1) are tied for third in the Pac-10, along with Washington and Washington State.

"We need another week of improvement going up to Eugene," Dorrell said. "We still aren't quite at our potential yet."

After Oregon, the Bruins play at No. 9 Notre Dame, and visit No. 10 California on Nov. 4.

Olson's injury will force him to miss a key stretch of the season. He could possibly return in time for the final three games -- Oregon State on Nov. 11, Arizona State on Nov. 18 and rival Southern California on Dec. 2.

Olson and Cowan competed for the starting job in training camp, with Olson emerging as the starter after spending a redshirt season at BYU, two years on a Mormon mission in Canada and one season as a reserve in Westwood.

Cowan's resume was equally spotty.

The sophomore made a single brief appearance last season, and had not attempted a pass until Saturday. But he proved an able replacement against the Wildcats, completing 20 of 29 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.

"Our team will rally around him," Dorrell said. "As the starter, Ben got 70 percent of the reps. He (Cowan) watched and always registered what to do. He stays involved in the game plan."

The Bruins didn't practice Monday, and Cowan and Olson weren't available to reporters.

Injured Brohm could play against Cincinnati
Injured Brohm could play against Cincinnati

By WILL GRAVES, Associated Press Writer
October 9, 2006

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Consider Brian Brohm a quick healer.

The Louisville quarterback said Monday that his surgically repaired right thumb feels so good he's optimistic he'll play Saturday when the No. 7 Cardinals (5-0) host Cincinnati.

Brohm had surgery on Sept. 17, a day after he sprained the thumb in Louisville's 31-7 win over Miami (Fla.). Doctors had originally said Brohm would be out up to six weeks, but Brohm said he's progressed enough that he could return against the Bearcats (3-3).

"I could play, it's the matter if that's what would be in the best interest of the team," said Brohm, who will wear a splint over the thumb until it is fully recovered. "I think I could probably play a game right now, but it wouldn't be the normal Brian Brohm you're used to seeing out there, so we've got to work on getting that strength back."

Coach Bobby Petrino said he'll wait and see how his Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback progresses during practice this week before determining whether Brohm takes any snaps against the Bearcats.

"If he's ready to play, I'll probably play him. Sounds like a good idea to me," Petrino said.

Brohm said his thumb is about "60-65 percent" of where it needs to be, but that he's seen "noticeable" improvement in the last week. The bigger concern isn't throwing the ball -- Brohm said he can make most of the throws he needs to make -- but how the thumb will react when it takes a snap or takes a hit.

"The impact and the same type of motion when I hurt it, that would be a problem," said Brohm, who injured the thumb when he slammed his right hand into the turf while being knocked down after throwing a pass in the third quarter against Miami.

The injury cut short Brohm's remarkable comeback from a right knee injury sustained last November. Doctors doubted that he would be ready for the start of the regular season, but he was taking snaps with the first team in preseason camp, less than nine months after surgery.

"It's frustrating to just come off the injury and get hurt third game back," said Brohm, who joked that he should change his major from finance to biology because of time spent with medical staff. "You've just got to keep hanging in there. I think if I let myself get too down, I'd just be out of it."

The Cardinals have hardly missed a beat without Brohm, posting relatively easy wins over Kansas State and Middle Tennessee. Backup Hunter Cantwell has played well, throwing for 692 yards and five touchdowns against two interceptions. The Cardinals' offense remains the top-ranked unit in the country, averaging 523 yards and 44 points.

"I think Hunter has improved tremendously," Petrino said. "I think he took a big step forward (against Middle Tennessee), being able to handle the pressure, delivering the ball on time accurately."

Cantwell threw for a career-high 340 yards and three scores against the Blue Raiders.

Petrino said he's not sure whether he would platoon Brohm and Cantwell against the Bearcats. If Brohm doesn't play, he said he should be "95 percent" when Louisville travels to Syracuse on Oct. 21.

Auburn's limping defense gets linebacker back
Auburn's limping defense gets linebacker back

By JOHN ZENOR, AP Sports Writer
October 9, 2006

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) -- Tray Blackmon felt even more helpless than his fellow Auburn defenders in the last two games.

The redshirt freshman linebacker, his six-game suspension now lifted, can try to give the 11th-ranked Tigers' beleaguered defense a hand Saturday against No. 2 Florida. Blackmon will play his first college game following the suspension for an underage-drinking arrest in May.

"Watching my guys out there going through some bad times, I kind of feel bad because I feel like I let them and myself down," Blackmon said. "I could be out there trying to make a difference. I said to myself that the way to take care of that is when I do come back, to make a difference."

The Tigers (5-1, 3-1 Southeastern Conference) could certainly use the help after back-to-back struggles. They couldn't stop Syvelle Newton and South Carolina's passing game, then allowed 279 yards rushing in a 27-10 loss to Arkansas.

Blackmon's return prompts a shuffling in the linebacking corps. A projected starter before his suspension, the former Parade All-American is battling Merrill Johnson for the No. 1 job at weak-side linebacker after winning the job in the spring.

The team's most experienced linebacker, Karibi Dede, will move from that spot to the middle, where Johnson has been starting.

The Tigers are hoping for a spark from the hard-hitting Blackmon, who forced 13 fumbles in his final two seasons at LaGrange (Ga.) High School.

"We've got some guys who can run around, but Tray has this knack of getting to the ball and being so explosive on his tackles," linebackers coach James Willis said. "He brings an added dimension to the ballgame, so I think that will help us out."

Blackmon was ordered to participate in a 90-day pretrial program following his arrest in LaGrange. Coach Tommy Tuberville suspended him and fellow linebacker Kevin Sears for an unspecified number of games for unrelated off-the-field incidents. Sears returned three weeks ago, while Blackmon waited.

The 6-foot, 210-pounder finally got the good news on Sunday.

"It made me feel good," Blackmon said. "I've been waiting for that call all season. I'm ready to contribute to the team."

The Tigers still rank sixth nationally in scoring defense, but have given up a combined 715 yards and 41 first downs the past two games. Dede thinks Blackmon can help change that.

"He's a big-time hitter, which is big for momentum in a game," he said. "I'm just anxious to see him get out there and just clock somebody."

Blackmon didn't publicly complained about the length of his suspension.

"When I came here, I gave all my trust to the coaches that they were going to do the right thing," he said. "I feel like if that's how long it took, that's how long it took."

But Blackmon likes the timing of his return, a chance to make his debut against the Gators' Chris Leak and a high-powered offense. How does it feel?

"I can't explain with words," he said. "Football is what I do. That's paying for my education. To not go out there and play is hard for me. I just want to make something happen."

While Lloyd Carr is being coy about star wide out Manningham there was a report this mornnig on a local radio station saying that Mario will have arthiscopic surgery on his knee for a partial tear of his mcl. If this is true I imagine he will not only miss the PSU game but also Iowa. After that Mich has some cupcakes on the schedule so he could be out even longer.

Update: Wynn says his sprained right knee had healed enough to play against Auburn on Saturday, the Tampa Tribune reports.

Recommendation: Wynn missed last week against LSU but 'guaranteed' he would play at Auburn. Auburn gave up almost 250 yards rushing to Arkansas last week and if Wynn is healthy, expect him to put up big numbers.

NEW MEXICO QB UPDATE:

Porterie gets starting nod

By LoboPub, Loboland.com Publisher – Rivals.com

If there was a quarterback controversy brewing for the University of New Mexico football team, Head Coach Rocky Long put a quick end to it Tuesday. When the Lobos hit Vegas this Saturday, they will do so with their third different starter of the season. Redshirt freshman Donovan Porterie will get the nod over senior Chris Nelson on Saturday's Mountain West Conference tilt against UNLV announced Long. Nelson, who has struggled at times since becoming the starter when Kole McKamey, who started the first two games, went down with a season-ending knee injury in the first series of the second game.

Porterie has seen limited action in three games this season, but now, he'll be getting the majority of reps in practice with the first team.

At 6-feet-4 and 200 pounds, Porterie is an outstanding young prospect who is a calm, poised passer in the pocket with a strong arm and seemingly effortless delivery. He led the offensive scout team last season and was named by teammates as the Most Valuable Offensive Scout for his practice performances last fall.

"He's more athletic," Long said. "He can get out of trouble a little bit better. If he starts to run with the ball, he's a little faster. I think he's just a little more athletic. We call different plays depending on who the quarterback is, and a lot of is determined by the quarterback too.

"There are certain plays a quarterback doesn't feel comfortable with. If you see them in practice and they continue to mess that play up, they'll be asked if they're comfortable with that play and if they're not we won't call it. Some guys have great confidence in their arm and some guys don't so there are certain routes that guys are willing to throw and certain routes other guys are not willing to throw because it is out of their ability range."

Porterie's numbers are fairly similar to Nelson's at least in terms of completion percentage and passing efficiency. Porterie has completed 10-of-21 passes for 136 yards and one touchdown. His completion percentage is 47.6, while his efficiency rating is 117.73.

Nelson has completed 56-of-117 passes for 789 yards, 7 TDs and three interceptions. His per game average is 157.8 yards per game, while his completion percentage is 47.9 and his efficiency rating is 119.12.
