KENT STATE +7 vs. Army
Kent State suffered a 44-0 opening day beating at the hands of Big Ten opponent Minnesota. Kent blew some early chances that could have resulted in a 17-14 deficit instead of 17-0 at the half. KSU fumbled a 64yd. completion at the goal line, and squandered a first and goal from the one by trying to go mano-a-mano against a stronger Gopher squad when they ran up and down the field in a spread formation. Their starting QB Michael Machen sat out with a shoulder injury, but JC transfer Julian Edelman did a fine job and was 6-10 for 149yards thru 3 quarters of play before being forced to throw nearly every down by potential post season bowl bound Minnesota ending 7-13 but with a 11.5yppass average and 21.4 per catch…that’s the YAC yards they always talk about. Najah Pruden caught 5 passes for 118 yards, and the Golden Flashes actually had a 100 yard rusher for the first time since 2004 but it seems more like 1994....as soph RB Eugene Jarvis ran for 109 yards on 15 carries.....how important is that....well, that's nearly 1/5th the total rushing yards Kent had all of last season and against a pretty good Gopher D, and the Flashes got 10 first downs rushing, 187 total yards rushing for the game, and earned a 3.6ypc average for the game. Meanwhile, Army looked like Saddam’s army losing to Arkansas State 14-6. The Cadets could only muster 164 yards of total offense while allowing 319 yards, including 222 rushing yards to the Indians. Army never got into the end zone and rushed 27 times for just 69 yards, and threw 12-22 for only 95 yards. They had 7 penalties for 56 yards, and one drive went backwards for -9 yards….thanks to MParrish for that last tidbit. Can’t see the Cadets handling the Flashes the way Minnesota did…..watch this line, it's gone up from 5.5!

AKRON ZIPS +10 vs. North Carolina State
Down but never out….
Trailing 17-3 at halftime last week vs. Penn State, the Zips (0-1) gained momentum after PSU fumbled the second half kickoff.
On a gutsy call….QB Luke Getsy hit TE Kris Kasparek for a 12-yard gain on fourth-and -7 from the Penn State 16, and on the next play, Dennis Kennedy bowled into the end zone for a 4-yard score cutting the deficit to 17-9. A PSU 54 yard kickoff return and subsequent TD stretched the lead 24-9 but the Nittany Lions struggled to lay the knock out punch all day. Check out the interesting numbers below:
Akron’s Defense –
• Penn State’s 13 total first downs are the fewest allowed by Akron since allowing eight vs. Kent State (11/24/05). Akron has held its opponent to 14 or fewer first downs in three of its last five games.
• Akron held Penn State to 76 rushing yards, the first time the Zips have held a Big Ten opponent under 100 yards rushing since moving to the I-A ranks in 1987 (nine games).
• The Zips allowed 282 yards of total offense by Penn State, the fewest total yards tallied by a Big Ten opponent since Akron moved to the I-A ranks in 1987 (previous: 413 vs. Illinois in 1996).
Akron’s Offense –
• Akron dominated the time of possession over the first three quarters, holding the ball for 29:18 compared to Penn State’s 14:54. The Zips finished with a 37:29 to 21:43 time-of-possession advantage.
• Each of Akron’s first two scoring drives took more than 4:30 off the clock (4:56 and 5:06).
• Getsy finished 22-of-42 for 160 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, while Kennedy ran for 59 yards on 25 carries, against a pretty good PSU defense. In 2005 Getsy threw for 3,455 yards and 23 touchdowns, setting 17 school records in the process.
• The teams were even with 11 first downs each over the first three quarters. Akron finished with 18 first downs to Penn State’s 13.
• Freshman David Harvey had three receptions for 41 yards, including his first career touchdown.
• Sophomore Dennis Kennedy had an efficient night for Akron, picking up 59 yards on 25 carries, while tallying 50 yards on eight receptions.
NCState struggled to a 23-10 win over D – IAA Appalachian State in their opener. Running back Andre Brown was the lone bright spot rushing for 125 yards on 15 carries for an 8.3ypc average. QB Marcus Stone was just 7-13 passing for 36 yards (116th), 1 TD and 1 INT and just 2.8 yards per pass attempt (116th). The Pack also were -2 in the turnover department. The stats say the Wolfpack are 5-2 SU in their last 7 HOME games, and they should be with wins over Appy State, So. Fla, Maryland, MTSU and So. Miss, but losses to BC and Clemson. In those wins, the Pack only out-gained the opposition by a total of 114 yards although outscoring those teams by 102-44 with their largest margin of victory coming 24-3 over MTSU and two games as close as 4 and 6 pts. Beating So. Miss 21-17 and Maryland 20-14. Their average margin of victory has been 20-8 in those home games and I think Akron can stay close to that margin. Time of possession will be key, and Luke Getsy having time to find to open man and not getting sacked like he did a Penn State last week.

Keeping with the BLUE andGOLD theme....
WINNA
PITT -8 vs. Cincinnati
Fresh off a 38-13 whipping of Virginia, the Panthers who have won 22 of their last 31 Big East games (.709), go to Cincinnati to face the Bearcats. Pittsburgh senior linebacker Clint Session 6’ 250lbs. was named the Big East Defensive Player of the Week for his defensive effort by collecting nine tackles, two tackles for losses and a 78-yard interception return for a touchdown. He helped the Panthers limit Virginia to 211 yards in total offense, including a mere 52 rushing yards on 21 attempts, 19-38 passing for 159 yards with 2 INTS and just two field goals. QB Tyler Palko threw a pair of first-down touchdown passes longer than 70 and finished 17 of 22 for 283 yards (that’s 77% completion rate and 16.7yds per pass),with three touchdowns, including a 72-yarder to Oderick Turner and a 78-yarder to Derek Kinder. Pitt also recorded 107 yards rushing. The Panthers controlled the time of possession keeping the ball for 33:39. The Bearcats recorded a 31-0 season opener win over Eastern Kentucky posting the school’s first shutout in 123 games (11 years). UC’s defense limited the EKU to 250 yards of total offense with Colonel quarterback Justin Greco, the Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Year (2,861 yards last season) limited to 159 yards passing. The Bearcats will likely continue their two-quarterback offense of Dustin Grutza and Nick Davila who produced four touchdowns, each throwing for a TD, while together totaling 282 yards passing. Tight-end Brent Celek lead the Bearcats with six catches for 81 yards in the season opener, while WR Dominick Goodman had four catches for 48 yards. The Bearcats are 7-2 SU in their last 9 HOME games but were 2-2 last season beating only Western Carolina 7-3 and UConn 28-17 and were out-gained 348-306 by the Huskies who also committed 3 turnovers. The trouble I find is when the leading receiver is your tight-end which evokes more of a ball control offense than throwing the pigskin downfield. And, Pitt’s defense faced a more formidable opponents than UC’s, so I give the edge to Pitt who is 5-2 ATS and 5-2 SU in their last 7 games. The Panthers won last year 38-20 and the total has gone OVER in 6 of Pitt’s last 8 games.

How's it going Joepa?
Be careful with BG this week. QB Anthony Turner comes back from suspension despite QB Freddie Barnes 159yds rushing vs. Wisconsin. BG has completely re-tooled its' offense more of the mold when Josh Harris was QB, with LOTS of QB runs. Turner is supposed to be a better passer than Barnes, but BG replaces basically all WR and Turner showed some bad decision making last year when Jacobs went down. Basically, clock will be running more than in the past, and no proven threat to show this team is capable of putting up points like it used too. On defense, BG has gone much smaller, but have gotten faster. Defense looks slightly improved, but still can be run on. Special Teams were awful against Wisconsin, just like last year. Keep in mind True frosh Punter and Kicker. I actually have a slight lean to Buffalo if any movement over the 21. Just can't see BG lighting the board in any way. GL this season, and as always I'll be hanign around. What is up with your Flashes? My lord they looked awful. lol

GL Joepa. I think you are right on with the Zips. From what I saw last weekend with the NCSU/APPSt game was we played very conservative. We only ran about 6-8 different plays all game. Our running game is our bright spot on offense. Stone the QB looks shaky like he did last year and doesn't step into the pocket well. He is always looking to take off if the 1 reciever is covered or force it. Nice write up. Here is for hopeing the PACK wins by less than 10.
