View Full Version : How to learn about horse racing?
Hello all, I'm interested in learning how to bet on horse racing. I know there is a ton of information and strategy involved, I'd like to begin learning how to be a successful horse racing capper. Where do I start? Any particular books or online resources? Thanks in advance.

ILLZ, I'm respecting the forum's rules by not putting in links in this reply, so my best advice is to do a google or yahoo search and look up top handicapping sites for horse racing.
There you will find odds, tips, dosage information, pedigree, etc.
Just put in "keyword" Horse Racing and you'll find a lot of great sites that are "FREE".
There is also a link at the top of this page for "Horse Betting"

Hope the info helps!!

Thanks for the reply. I started by clicking the link at the top of this page. There is a horse betting tip sheet on there that includes this tip:
"Front runners win more than their share of races at good odds, especially if they can get a clear lead early in the race and make their rivals play catch up. When you look at the running lines in the racing program, try to find a horse that has an abundance of 1s and 2s in its running lines. If you can find only one horse in the race with this type of running lines, there is a good chance that horse will be the lone speed".
What do they mean by "running lines"? Does that refer to where they've previously finished in their recent races? I'm pretty familiar with a race program, just not this particular terminology.

ILLZ, try Horse Racing 101 in the web search. That's a fantastic site for terminology, etc.
When I cap races, I am looking for closers, horses that finish strong and I also look at the distance the horses must run. I look at their race times for those races as well and incorporate the distance they are going to run with their average speed per race. I also look at their dosage, horses with good bloodlines and also the jockey's history. You have to weigh those factors in determining who you like.
Some just go by blind luck and bet on the colors the horses are wearing and their favorite numbers. Sometimes this ain't a bad idea either..LMAO...
I liked Bernardini last time out in the Preakness because he won, placed or showed in his 3 races. I liked Barbaro some too, however I only looked at 3 horses I felt had better money lines (payouts) and looked at their overall records and the jockeys they were being ridden by. Desormeaux is great and so is Prado.
I also liked Sweethnorthernsaint because he underachieved in the Derby and had some left in the tank for this race.
Belmont stakes is next and should be a great race.

I'm not familiar with that terminology as well ILLZ. The only thing I can think of as far as running lines might be how one configures race results time for distance perhaps. I'm totally not with it on "running lines" statement either.
