Bobby Cox and Tony LaRussa have to be at the top of my list.
Cox has done it when players get injured, has shown patience with young players to let them develop, and gone on a completely overlooked run in pro sports.
If Lou Piniella were still around, I'd throw him in the worst category.
I truly recognize that speaking on TV in front of a camera and coaching, managing, motivating in private or 1 on 1 are 2 different things ... however, he showed his lack of baseball intelligence as an announcer IMO.
Gardenhire in MIN is a good manager.
I'd put Bochy up near the top as well.

you can take away my gardenhire vote if he inserts Rondell WHite in the 4 hole 1 more time this year.

Ain't that the truth....and the same could pretty much be said about every manager that has been in Philly since Dallas Green, LOL
At least he won a world series

I actually feel LaRussa is VASTLY overrated. Part of that stems from him pretty much inventing how the bullpen and closer are used today, but the guy has had GREAT talent year in and year out and he never wins dick. If he didn't win one with that A's team (I mean drug experiment) it would've been a disgrace, and then he finally gets back 15 or so years later and gets swept by the Red Sox.
Cox I guess has to be considered as one of the premier guys, but to be honest (and I'm biased b/c I HATE the Braves as a Met fan), I could have managed all through the 90's with Glavine, Smoltz, and Maddux on the hill 5 days a week. 14 straight division championships and 1 World Series ring say it all IMO (even though I definitely recognize the seeming impossibility of the Braves streak). Mazzone and the pitchers were a bigger part of their success IMO, as evident so far this season.
Willie Randolph is fast becoming one of the biggest X's and O's donkeys in recent history IMO. It's tough to stomach sometimes. Tuesday he brings in Heilman to intentionally walk Bonds? What the hell? Let the starter do it, THEN bring in Heilman. Don't bring the guy in and have him immediately, and purposely, throw 4 consecutive balls!?!?!
I always found Lou Pinella, Lloyd McClendon, Buck Showalter, Charlie Manuel and Larry Bowa to be complete and utter morons managerial-wise.
I like Ozzie Guillen's style of managing but not how he talks about his players publicly. I like the young guys Ned Yost and Eric Wedge, and a couple old timers in Frank Robinson, Bobby Cox, and even Joe Torre I give much respect too for all he has to deal with.
BUT........ If I had to choose a guy for 1 game with 2 equal teams matched up, I would choose Mike Scioscia as my guy.

Cuse- pretty much agree with a lot of that.....LaRussa completely overmanages games and doesn't look at the situtation.....he will pull a guy that no one has hit all day because the book says bring in a lefty with a mustache who ate pizza last night and hasn't face a hitter over 6'5 in a week+.....
i actually think booby cox is a pretty good manager....
i love sosh here in ANA/LAAofSoCalofCA.....good guy too....

the mustache says it all. I mean I myself am overwhelmed and mesmerized by a good handlebar late 70s pornbutt mustache that would decidely distract me if I were in the hitters box.
