GAME NOTES: The Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens take aim at their first true road win of the season today, when they take on the host Towson Tigers in Colonial Athletic Association action. The Blue Hens have had little success in CAA play this season, as they have won just once in nine league bouts thus far. On Thursday, the team was defeated at home by Virginia Commonwealth for its second loss in a row and its seventh in the past eight games. With the setback, UD fell to a dismal 5-13 overall and 3-4 at home. The Blue Hens now hit the road where they are 0-9 this season and have lost 12 straight dating back a year ago. As for Towson, it has also lost two games in a row, the most recent of which being an 82-70 setback at Hofstra on Thursday. With the loss, the team fell under .500 overall at 9-10 and to an even 5-5 in league play. The Tigers now return home where they are 5-3 this season, including 3-1 against CAA foes. With regard to the all-time series between these two schools, Delaware owns a 34-20 advantage, although the Tigers won the first meeting this season, 96-92, at the Bob Carpenter Center.
On Thursday, the Blue Hens were outdone at the foul line, where they converted just 5-of-9 attempts compared to an 18-of-23 effort by VCU in a four-point loss. Delaware was also outrebounded, 35-29, although it did shoot 7-of-20 from long range. Harding Nana paced the team in defeat with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Rulon Washington also tallied 15 points. Nana has been one of the few bright spots for the Blue Hens this season, as he leads the CAA in rebounding (11.2 ppg), while ranking second in scoring (19.4 ppg). He has posted 10 double-doubles in 2005-06 and even has 21 steals to his credit. As a team, Delaware is averaging a respectable 70.9 ppg thus far, although it is allowing 74.9 ppg to its foes.
Towson turned the ball over 19 times which resulted in 24 points for Hofstra in a 12-point setback to the Pride on Thursday. The miscues proved to be the difference, as the Tigers shot 42.0 percent from the floor in the game and made 8-of-22 three-point tries and 20-of-25 free throws attempts. Gary Neal paced the team in defeat with 36 points behind 7-of-12 shooting from long range. Lawrence Hamm also got into the mix, as he recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. On the season, Neal has been simply sensational for the Tigers, as he is averaging an eye-popping 27.1 ppg on 40.9 percent shooting from three-point land and 81.3 percent at the foul line. Hamm has provided a nice complement down low and is turning in 15.6 ppg and a team- high 9.0 rpg. Dennard Abraham adds 10.9 ppg and 5.5 rpg for Towson, which is averaging 70.9 ppg behind 45.8 percent shooting from the floor for the season.
Towson has clearly been the better of these two teams during CAA play this year, and with a big game from Neal and company, it should have no trouble keeping Delaware winless on the road.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Towson 90, Delaware 70
