Been looking at getting a new Plasma for the man room! Found 2 at BB that I really liked! One was a Pioneer 50" PDP-5061 hd and the other was a Panasonic 50" TH-50PX50U! They ran in price from 4K to 5K! After spending a hour looking at them I went down the street where a friend use to work and talk to the mananager! He had a Sony 50" PFM50! I can not find it on the net and from my understanding Sony stopped making Plasmas! He said it was rated number 1 on consumer reports! Don't have a membership to there site so I can not check! Went back to BB and talk to the manager and he said its a good TV and when I told him the price he told me it was a good deal. The guy said he would give it to me for 3700 and the wall mount for 450. The list price was 4200 and 700 for the wall mount!

Does anyone have any insight to Plasmas! Any information would be great!

Before you knock the Plasma the reason I'm leaning this way is cause it would fit the room better than the LCD and DLP! I want to mount it on the wall by the corner so it can flip out!

Thanks again
BB

Billy, you can get any of these for a much better price. Shop around. Im sure you can get the tv and mount for as low as 35. I personally would go for the Pioneer. Excellent tv...and if you have the extra grand to spend, the Elite is the way to go....$700 for a wall mount are you kidding me! There are hundreds of good quality mounts for 2-3...You definetely will be paying full retail price if your gonna buy from a local electronics vs internet. Enjoy whichever way you go and btw dont forget your 1080 conversion dvd player...Dvds in HD.

Billy for me personally, not seen one yet that can match the color
and sharpness of the Panasonic. Just watched Capt. Jack Sparrow in the Curse of the Black Pearl, one baad ass in HD.

BB, check out Samsung, purchased mine 2 years ago when the Panthers went to the Super Bowl and took 2 DLP's and a Sony plasma back prior to sticking with this gem. 4K price, should be cheaper now 3-3.5 for a quality unit. The stock speakers are fantastic and the picture is perfect. I have a 46" and only problem is I keep it in my gambling room / trophy room / office and the heat is a bit much for a 14 x 16 room. Plasma is the best way to go, IMO. I have an LCD in our bonus room that is 9 months old and already missing pixels. Whatever you buy spend the extra $300 for a service plan b/c you will probably need it.

Called a friend up who manages a few stores in the area!

He told me one of the hottest plasma was this Toshiba!

He gave me a great price from what I have seen on the net!

I went by the guys recommendation at Best Buy. Think it was
$3700 for the 50". Just standing back and looking at them
it was hands down the sharpest picture. Like the way the
cables hook up also on the Panasonic. Sure they all have
their own pluses. Good luck. Plus they have the geek squad
for guys like me that have too been left behind by the techno craze.

Interesting that this should be brought up here...

Hope ya don't mind BB, but I got a question that has to do with these types of TV's as well, so I figured I'd post it in here....

Anyway, about a month or so ago, my 27" TV I used in my computer/music/gambling room died that I had for about 15 years, lol, so I went to Best Buy, and I was actually looking to get a smaller LCD (between 25" and 31") to replace it.

The guy I talked to there said that it wasn't worth my while getting one, basically because the picture wouldn't even be as good as a tube TV since I don't have HD service.....and I wasn't about to upgrade my DirecTV for 8 freakin channels in HD, so I went to Wal Mart and got a 27" flat tube TV for less than $200, lol.

I actually really like the picture on my new Wal Mart special, so I'm not disappointed, but I really would have liked to get the LCD...and I'd still like to get one sometime in the future, maybe to replace the 52" GIANT floor model in my living room, which takes up alot of space that could be better used to add to my arcade game collection (currently only have a Pac Man, Ms Pac Man and a Megatouch cause that's all I can fit with that big ass TV, lol)

Anyway....back to my subject....anyone with experince with these types of TV's who can shed some light for me on if it's true that the picture is actually no better on an LCD (or plasma), or even a bit worse if you're not watching something in HD?

Thanks

Billy, I personally haven't heard or seen anything Toshiba related. Guess it's not one of the "popular brands" for a tv. If your still undecided, I would stick to one of your original choices. Picture quality shouldn't be a big factor, there all up there. My concern would be the warranty on them. Not sure if you have a 'Costco wholesales' in your area...they do have a few selections including the Elite but most importantly they offer lifetime warranty, so if your ever unhappy you can bring it back. But then again, if you can get a good deal from a friend, why not.

Stif, the guy is right. Picture quality on a "regular" tv vs. a high definition would not be that much better. There have been some improvements but nociteably you would have to watch in HD. I had DirectTv years ago, not sure how there are now but I have heard that they offer a wide selection of channels in HD. Us cable guys have 8 or so channels in HD. Urgh! but for 5 extra bucks and yearlong filled with sports if a sports fanatics' must. The games in HD are just absolutly amazing. Picture and sound. Come to think of it, DirectTv's NFL package should be broadcast in HD. Every game...Besides the 8 channels, you'll always have movies in HD.

Mike I did some research and found that the Toshiba offers everything the panasonic has and more and is a little cheaper!

Just had it installed the other day and and I'm in LOVE! I come home everyday in AW! Man it is beatiful! 100% happy with the Toshiba! Fucken thing is HUGH! I was unable to put it in the corner like I wanted to because of the concrete wall! Ended up moving the furniture and putting it on the long wall! The installers tryed to talk me out of the moveable arm but I told them I wanted it! I can move the thing anyway I want! Man I love this TV! Best investment for me in a long time! Other than my home!

Love it! I'm so hyped about Superbowl!!!!

Thanks guys for your help
