Bro, I need your help... I use to be a computer tech as well, but I have been out of the business for several years, so I need your advice.

A friend mine has a broken PC, and he asked me to take a look at it. It is an Emachines computer, several years old. It has an AMD XP2600 cpu, and a motherboard that I believe is made by or proprietary to Emachines (AU31 is what it says on the motherboard). Anyhow, here is the deal:

I was at his house, and the machine would not power on at all... no juice, as if it wasn't even plugged in. I thought that most likely the power supply had blown, so I brought the machine back to my house. The next day, I bought a replacement power supply. Now, I plugged his computer in to my house (before replacing the power supply) and the machine turned on, without even pressing the power button. However, the machine would not POST at all... nothing, no beeps, no display, nothing... but all the fans did turn on. So, I replaced the power supply.... same deal... as soon as I plug it in, it turns on by itself, but DOES NOT POST....

Anyhow, I talked to Emachines and they said the machine was out of warranty, and there was nothing they could do except sell me replacement parts. Now, I have no problem replacing cpu's motherboards, etc... did that for several years.... but, according to their website, I can not return any replacement parts I purchase... Now, back in the day when i repaired computers, my gut feeling would be that the problem is either the Power Supply, the motherboard, or the CPU (I remember that AMD cpu's seemed to fry frequently). And of course, I had all the spare parts accessible to troubleshoot... I don't have that luxury anymore. I know its not the power supply. So, I'm thinking either MB or CPU... I only want to buy one part if possible (meaning, I want to buy the correct part!!).... what do you think? My gut tells me motherboard, but i'm not sure.

Thanks bro.

Skins- Emachine!!!! Wow have not heard that in a while.

Skins- From what you have told me their is no easy way to say what the problem is.

It could be

A. Motherboard

B. Video Card

C. Memory

D. Processor

Their is no way to determain what it actually is w/ out testing each individual part first...

So the best way unfortunatly is to replace each part seperatly..

Also- Emachines are shit-they suck and never had been good- see if you can price him out a computer and make him one- Might be the better idea- since you can not return any parts you buy- that fucking sucks as well.

Anything else let me know- also let me know how it turns out- thanks!

I'd buy a new one. I had an emachines once and it was always having issues.

They serve a good purpose for what their for, which is similar to a geo metro. 100k miles and you throw it away instead of getting it repaired.

LMAO

Sometimes, if the 2 story vertical drop fails me, I go for the 10 story assisted acceleration launch. Usually that does the trick:thumbs:

My suggestion is call his local electic company..especially if when you got to his house the lights were off and he was using a flashlight..that may explain why it would not power up. Then try the Ram1500 reboot, this can be supplanted with the Ford F350 reboot if necessary. If that is not the problem get the dude some Alien Hardware! BTW this info is free of charge as is all the info I post here. GL and Go Redskins!:prtytme:
