I have been at this game for nearly 40 years now, and have had the priveledge of meeting many succesful gamblers in the process. I once talked to Lefty Rosenthal, a legendary gambler and casino operator about developing a talent to pick the right team vs having an ability to just look at the board and pick winners. Lefty said that you had to be born with the talent. You could develop systems to help you select winners, but you had to have that sixth sense about you.
I decided to put this to the test. I do not like the NBA. I know little or nothing about it. I dislike the players, the game itself, and have little respect for it. I do not follow the games. What I know about the NBA is what I see and hear on ESPN. This is just my opinion on the NBA. I'm sure I am in the minority here.
I entered an NBA contest. Sides and Totals. My record so far is 108-92. Nothing to write home about, but it does prove a point. Just by looking at a line, and using extremely limited knowledge about a game, I can still break even or turn a small profit. Why? I really don't know. I'm sure that common sense plays a part in it. I did fade the Lakers when Kobe was suspended. I guess that could be considered common sense. If the line just does not apeal to me, don't play it. If something stands out, for no aparent reason, I go for it. This entire experiment is an exercise in my sixth sense.
I think Lefty is right. You have to have that sixth sense that tells you what is right, and more importantly, what is wrong about a wager. The successful gambler had to have the ability to look at the board and pick games without any outside help. If you can break even just by looking at the odds, think what you can do if you took he time to develop a system of wagering. I believe that very few gamblers have that ability. The ones that do are the ones that consistantly turn profits year after year, and those people are very few and far between.
