View Full Version : Are You Born With It?

I have been at this game for nearly 40 years now, and have had the priveledge of meeting many succesful gamblers in the process. I once talked to Lefty Rosenthal, a legendary gambler and casino operator about developing a talent to pick the right team vs having an ability to just look at the board and pick winners. Lefty said that you had to be born with the talent. You could develop systems to help you select winners, but you had to have that sixth sense about you.

I decided to put this to the test. I do not like the NBA. I know little or nothing about it. I dislike the players, the game itself, and have little respect for it. I do not follow the games. What I know about the NBA is what I see and hear on ESPN. This is just my opinion on the NBA. I'm sure I am in the minority here.

I entered an NBA contest. Sides and Totals. My record so far is 108-92. Nothing to write home about, but it does prove a point. Just by looking at a line, and using extremely limited knowledge about a game, I can still break even or turn a small profit. Why? I really don't know. I'm sure that common sense plays a part in it. I did fade the Lakers when Kobe was suspended. I guess that could be considered common sense. If the line just does not apeal to me, don't play it. If something stands out, for no aparent reason, I go for it. This entire experiment is an exercise in my sixth sense.

I think Lefty is right. You have to have that sixth sense that tells you what is right, and more importantly, what is wrong about a wager. The successful gambler had to have the ability to look at the board and pick games without any outside help. If you can break even just by looking at the odds, think what you can do if you took he time to develop a system of wagering. I believe that very few gamblers have that ability. The ones that do are the ones that consistantly turn profits year after year, and those people are very few and far between.

Im sure we can drum up many opinions about being born with it or not.

I think it's a combination of many things. Ironically, stats/trends are not one of them.

A few for starters are common sense, self discipline and watching a ton of games. Situational things such as 3rd road game in 4 nights in the nba and that type of stuff seem to work well too.

If you can figure out the motivation/emotional state of a team, this alone can give you an edge.

I know Im all over the place but these are just a few things.

Knowing when to go against the public is also a key factor in winning. Not for everybody, but for some it's golden as ya don't just go vs. the public, ya do it in certain spots.

Oh, and another thought on gambling. Dont take notes from anything said on espn. It'll bury you if you use it for your capping.

Hemet is basically a retirement town. It is a nice plce to live, but work is almost non-existant in the area. If you do not mind travelling if you have to work, then it is fine.

Hemet has an advantage over other desert areas like the Palm Springs Area. Hemet does not have the weather extremes that those communities have. We do not get as much heat in the summer, and we do not get the wind and severe thunderstorms that they get. The disadvantage is that Hemet is a small community and does not have a lot of things going for it entertainment wise. It is about a 45 minute drive to downtown Palm Springs from Hemet, about 80-90 minutes to downtown San Diego, and over 2 hours to L.A. Feel free to E-mail me if you want to know more.

ESPN has it's place for gamblers. I find that ESPN News can be valuable for injury reports and late breaking news. I do not pay attention to any opinions on any ESPN station, but I do use them as a news source for injuries, weather, and other non-opionated things that may change a game.
