I always face yesterday 12/7 and today 12/8 with a heavy heart....my grandfather fought in the Pacific theater after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and of course as a hippie acid casualty of the 70's the death of John Lennon always hits me hard....I'm as much a Beatlehead as a Deadhead.....and I think its fitting to pay respects to Johnny Ace in a sports gambling forum....I am one of those unfortunate souls to have gotten the news from Howard Cosell on MNF right before 11pm 25 years ago....I was in a bud's dorm room at USC....the USC lol.....doing bongs and laying 10 bucks a game on MNF back then when the news hit....I will never forget it and I hope those that were aware of him back then never do.....we started doing tequila shots and drinking frozen kamakazee slushes with drops of some of the best liquid acid you could have put your hands on....I think we stopped crying and partying on Thursday.....for those that are interested GDRadio.net is streaming live Lennon right now and it is so friggin righteous....we miss you John....the world would be so much of a better place if you were still with us.....God Bless everyone

Thanks for sharing your memories on this.. I was in middle school back then and really never a huge Beatles fan but the news effected me even at that early age. Seemed pretty senseless then and well, it's does not make anymore sense now. Killing people who stand for peace and write great music makes as much sense as letting these brutal killers and child molestors sit on death row for 10 - 20 years(on our tax dollars) instead of doing society a favor early on.. You know it was a big day in history when everyone knows what they were doing when it happend. His conduct and music have as much relevence now as they always have and if everyone lived their lives in the manner John did, this place would be damn near heaven...

I turned 8 the day Lennon was killed but remember it like it was yesterday. I had been outside throwing around a new Nerf football I had just gotten for my birthday. I ran back in the house and saw the Breaking News story on the TV as they were anouncing that Lennon had been shot. I remember later that night watching the national news and seeing the people gathered in Central Park singing "All You Need Is Love" while they cried.
I grew up playing music and once introduced to the Beatles and Lennons work I was forever hooked. He was truly a musical genius.

8 years old....middle school....you guys are making me feel like the old man i am....
said....lest we forget that just two months prior in September 1980 one of the greatest rock and roll drummers of all time passed....John Bonham....i didnt become a deadhead until I went off to college....prior to that zep was one of my favs and in particular i loved Bonham....my brother was a drummer and he used to drive me friggin nuts in his bedroom with the door closed...zep piping to his headphones and him beating those skins to moby dick....i used to tell him to take off the headphones so I could here the music with him....there wasnt a sliver of space in the house you could go to escape those damn drums....my high school buds were all beside ourselves that they were finally coming back to the U.S. for a tour....the show was announced at the Rectum in Philly and then he choked on his own puke after rehearsing in England for the tour and that was it for LZ....man he was sooo friggin good....booze fucking killed him though....same with Lowell George....Vodka killed them both...the next bottle I crack open will be dedicated to the both of them....what a friggin waste....

you didnt need the drugs to understand the message....thats for sure....we who did indulge actually thought the music was enhanced while under the influence....but i know now that was just an excuse to use....I was jamming Rubber Soul, Revolver and the White Album long before I dropped my first hit of acid....snorted coke or smoked smack....and you know its not to late to listen and become familiar with it now....the music of these guys is timeless as far as i'm concerned....the message that we embraced from John Lennon 25-30 years ago would fit right into our society now....unfortunately we are still fighting the evils of war...poverty....racial and religious discrimination today....its a sad testament to how much we really have progressed....or regressed in some instances....since Lennon first layed naked with Yoko in that hotel in Canada so many years ago....Give Peace A Chance was no more relevant in 1969 than right now at this very moment....

There is definately something beautiful, strange and sorrowful about the death of John Lennon! If there ever was a musical genius, he was one of them! His songs resonate more now than ever! No matter where you were coming from...John Lennon spoke for everyone!
Could you imagine how the world would be if John Lennon were still alive?!?! Wouldn't it had been great to see him walk out on that stage during LIVE 8 and sing for those poor countries who desperately need help! He brought a simple message...peace and love! It's what the Beatles believed in and it's what John believed in!
Two thing you guys need to buy now if you loved John Lennon! First, the LIFE magazine which is doing a tribute to him this month! Some fascinating pictures of him with and without the Beatles. Second, check out Rolling Stone's article this month about Lennon called: THE MAKING OF A GENIUS. Both are truly great reads if you are a John Lennon fan!
I hear his songs and it makes me realize what a tremendous loss we endured one tragic night! He had a lot more to say, to feel, to express to us all! To John Lennon....the dream is over, what can I say?

I was only 8 as well, but remember it vividly, as my parents were huge beatles fans.
I bet it would make him sick to find out that the US government's foreign policy is in an even worse state than when he was singing about revolutions and peace in the 70's.
I'm sure he is also rolling over in his grave about how the religious right has taken over his adopted country. :bang:
I can almost hear him.

Leaf.....you are "Dead" on......:yeah:
Religious Dominionism has seeped into every crevace of our society. It's not exactly what John had wanted, he stood for peace and love, the US generation, not the me generation.
I was not much of a music or Beatles aficianado until high school when I moved to the "big city" and my friends exposed me to the White Album which had debuted some years earlier.....Glass Onion, Ob-La-Di, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Hey Jude, etc. etc.......don't know how I missed it......By the time I got to them they were split up and each year I yearned for a reunion just as many of their fans did. I was sorry to have missed it but glad that I did get to know their music......and luckily I had an older brother who broke out the Zepplin, Skynyrd and CCW or I'd probably be stuck singing Elvis songs since my mom was hooked on "the pelvis"! The simplistic cover on The White Album was certainly by design because everybody copied St. Pepper's cover style.....and it was indicative of their back to the basic approach to music and care free style. The thing I love about the White Album is that The Beatles revealed that Paul was the Walrus, John was missing his alcohol and cigs while in India, it was all REAL!

by the way bro- In need of some advice as you said you've partaken in some drugs.... my uncle who is a HUGE(Lennon) fan has a problem right now....likes hittin the crack too much, has quit his job, can't pass drug tests to get a job(even after buying the cleansers) and all he wants to do is hit the rock on a pop can, and watch TV all day......he's a great guy and I'll always love em and hang with em when I go to visit him in TN, but he's just totally given up EVERYTHING for it.....in terms of his life, that's all he does, all day every day...and eventually his $$ will run out and that's when sht will hit the fan...He used to never be like this, he used to have a wife and all but once they divorced he took it rough and started drinking and picked up on the crack which he had just done a few times back in the day...problem is now it's an EVRYDAY thing..I've tried helpin him but he says he doesn't have a problem and he's fine......problem is he aint fine, he's just livin this miserable life where he's gotta take a hit every hour or so just to function.......what's the best way to approach this from a family standpoint??.....I know people like this don't want to hear a bunch of lecture BS and that's how he is and he'll just get pissed when any of the family tries to approach him in that matter.......thx bro in advance for any help.....
