Trying to get back over the hump in pucks, and I'm laying some big units down tonight. Hoping for some birthday luck with my first Game of the Year pick...
ISLANDERS -140 at Blues GOTY * 3 Units
Love this play. Islanders should not have a problem with the awful Blues tonight. NYI are an under-rated team who are going for their sixth win in seven road games, and coming off a big win IN Detroit Sunday! Islanders have good balanced scoring and are solid in net.
BUT this play is a STL fade. The Blues snapped another losing streak last game by beating the lowly Bluejackets...an injury riddled team who are maybe the only team worse in the league. STL has some bad injury problems. Their top 2 defenceman are out as Christian Backman joins Eric Brewer on the IR. The Blues' defense was brutal to begin with, and now it is in shambles. Three of the six blue-line players who will be in uniform for the game tonight have played 45 games or fewer in the NHL.
Against Columbus, Patrick Lalime was back in net after a 6 game benching (he has been brutal all year) and got the win (big deal). But that is not much of a test, and with the firepower of NY, and the depleted STL defence, whoever starts in goal for STL should see alot of rubber tonight.
FLAMES +105 at Flyers
Philly is another team with injury problems with their best forward, defenceman and goalie all out (Forsberg, Pitkanen & Esche). After a slow start, Calgary is a hot team with Kiprusoff rock solid in net. Since Nov. 1, Kiprusoff is 10-2-1 with a 1.80 goals-against average and .924 save percentage with two shutouts. He's also 2-0 with a 1.94 GAA and .934 save percentage in his career against the Flyers. I'll take the road dog in this spot.
HURRICANES +110 at Ducks
Canes on a little bit of a slide, but I'll play them as a dog with goalie Gerber returning to his old building in California. Not my strongest capped play, but going with my gut.
SHARKS PL +152 vs Thrashers
Sharks look to be a different team with big Joe in the lineup. His biggest influence has been getting the other teams top checking line away from Pat Marleau. Pat's got 6 points in 2 games since Joe came on board, and really gives them a dominant 1-2 punch up the middle. Atlanta cannot keep the puck out of the net, they lost bad last night in Phoenix, and travel north to face a rested SJ team. Could get ugly. Second strongest play of the night, so I'll play the Puck Line.
