X is gonna mark the spot for Southern Ohio again this year...:yeah:

Stuebenville.....:yeah:

GL! on the plays....going to play TULSA, as well. Just haven't decided which way i think the line is going to go......

Southern Ohio is really tired of the game always being in Northern Ohio. They need to rotate that sucker, in all honesty. Paul Brown Stadium, Oxford or Nippert would all be just as good as Fawcett.....GL!

Q.....been thinking about that.....in due time bro after I go to Disney World.....LMAO.....I'll be there in between bowl games, just watching and observing right now...:yeah:

Flyer.....I hope the Big Red win it all and St. X drills Massillon.....how about the Shoe man....gee that would never happen but should for the big boys game! They also could play at Cols. Crew Stadium, they hold the Ohio North-South game and have hosted the Big 33 All-Star game PA vs. OH! After St. X wins they ought to just move the OHSAA to Cincy!

Ahhhhh Yes higher edcuation during finals week. Heck I am suprised you got that much info out(LOL)!! BOl this week..

Got any takes on the NILL/Akron tilt? Akron has played well of late but then again has not played anyone good.. NILL has been playing very well. May just have to go with gut the MAC has been very tough to nail down this year... I know NILL lost by 6 earlier at Akron in a very high scoring affair...

St. Xavier brings home first state championship

By Tom Ramstetter
Post contributor

CANTON, Ohio - The St. Xavier High School football team had a sea of Tigers orange and a furious Massillon Washington comeback bid to deal with Saturday night in the Division I state football final before a crowd of 20,227 at Fawcett Stadium. But the Bombers held on to post a 24-17 win on the Catholic feast of St. Francis Xavier with the big-play defense coming up big.

It was the first state championship for the Bombers after three unsuccessful trips to the final in 1992, 1998 and 2001. St. X is the fourth straight Cincinnati team to win the Division I crown. Elder stopped an area drought that dated to 1987 with back-to-back titles in 2002 and 2003, and Colerain won in 2004. Fifteen minutes after the final whistle, the only orange remaining at the stadium was the orange stain on Bombers head coach Steve Specht's white St. X visor, left by a Gatorade shower from his players. The only sea remaining was the sea of blue celebrating in the stands and on the field.

Massillon, though claiming 22 state poll titles before the Ohio High School Athletic Association went to a playoff format in 1972, is now 0-for-3 in finals appearances. Moeller beat the Tigers in 1980 and 1982. "It feels tremendous, not only for our team but for the teams previous that never got the chance and just to represent the whole St. X community," senior quarterback Brad Scherer said. "It's an honor and a blessing. To be able to play in an environment like this, its special. It's very special."

"It's great because it's the first one in 175 years of St. X history," senior linebacker Alex Albright said. Albright sacked Massillon junior quarterback Bobby Huth at the Tigers' 16 and then at the 4 on first and second down on the final Massillon drive. Junior defensive back Jon Saelinger then came up with his second interception of the fourth quarter on Shawn Weisend's third-and-26 bomb with just less than a minute left in the game to seal the win.

"We knew we definitely had to step up there," Albright said. "There was limited time on the clock. It was crunch time and luckily enough coach Specht put me in the position where I was able to make a play. He put me on the side without the tight end. That way I would have a better chance pass-rushing. That's what we did and luckily I was able to get in there and make a play."

"We just told them we were going to drop eight and force them to earn it," Specht said. "They didn't have much time. When you have a kid like Alex Albright, we just turned him loose. We said, 'Alex go get them and do whatever you need to do to get back there.' There's a reason he's going to Boston College on a full scholarship. He's a special player."

The Bombers led 24-3 with 5:48 to play in the third quarter after sophomore running back Darius Ashley scored his 10th touchdown of the playoffs and the 28th of the season from 50 yards out. The Tigers answered with a five-play 58-yard drive that ended with a 31-yard touchdown pass from Huth to a leaping Trey Miller in the right-front corner of the end zone with 3:49 left in the third.

St. X moved into Tigers territory on its next possession, but junior defensive back Andrew Dailey stripped Ashley of the ball and returned it 80 yards for another touchdown with 9:50 remaining in the fourth quarter. Ashley and the offense were able to chew up clock and the defense held on the final three Massillon drives to stall the rally. Saelinger intercepted a bomb from Huth at the St. X 22 with 6:17 to play and Massillon went three-and-out on its next drive. The Bombers gained one first down on their last drive, but punted to the Tigers with 1:25 left.

"I thought when we went up 24-3 we were in pretty good shape," Specht said. "But they have no quit to them. You see what they did last week to Lakewood St. Ed's (in a comeback win) to get into the finals. They came back with a big pass play and then Darius unfortunately got stripped. That happens. The defensive back made a heck of a play, but we were able to churn some first downs out and then at the end of the game we were able to stop them defensively and that's big."

Ashley led all rushers with 153 yards on 27 carries after gaining just 41 yards on 13 carries in the first half. Scherer rushed 15 times for 97 yards and completed just two of 13 passes for 24 yards. Lanale Robinson led Massillon with 50 yards on nine carries. Standout running back Brian Gamble was limited to 13 yards on nine carries. Huth completed 15 of 21 passes for 172 yards. The Bombers held a 279-46 advantage on the ground.

And another one for ya Flyer.....Steubenville CC got shutout 28-0 by Delphos St. John

Steubenville wins Ohio Division III crown

By NICK BEDWAY
MASSILLON, Ohio - Championships are forever.

So will the golden memories of the ecstatic coaches, players and fans surrounding Steubenville Big Red's undefeated 2005 Ohio Division III state championship football team. "I can't believe we won. This is crazy,'' said Big Red quarterback Zach Collaros during a lovefest-type celebration which followed Steubenville's dominating 28-7 victory over Columbus St. Francis DeSales Friday.

Collaros led all rushers in the game with 159 yards on 21 carries. Using his shifty feet, speed and marvelous cutting ability, Collaros scored Big Red's first touchdown with a 24-yard run in the third quarter and their last one when he ran another quarterback keeper for a 28-yard TD. "Nothing good comes easy,'' reminded an elated Reno Saccoccia, who had tears in his eyes as he was hugging everybody in sight. "We couldn't have done it without our fans. That's why our players went over to thank them right after the game,'' he added.

Among an impressive crowd of 9,250 was a sea of Big Red supporters that filled the home side of historic Paul Brown Tiger Stadium in Massillon on a snowy and bitterly cold Friday morning to open the Ohio High School Athletic Association's championship weekend. It also set up what could be the greatest two days in the history of Jefferson County football. Following in the footsteps of Steubenville's accomplishment yesterday, Steubenville Catholic Central should have its own legion of fans on hand today when it plays Delphos St. John's at 3 p.m., also at Massillon, for the Division VI crown.

By defeating DeSales (10-4), Saccoccia's charges became the first Ohio Valley high school football team to go 15-0 in a season. It was his second championship in 23 years at the helm. Big Red's other Ohio title under the playoff system began in 1972 came during the 1984 campaign. "Every team I've coached is special,'' Reno said when asked which of his state championships meant the most to him. "It doesn't matter if we go 2-8, 4-6, 5-5 or 8-2, I love all those kids. "You have to have a little luck to go 15-0 and win something like this,'' Saccoccia said. "We've had other teams who might have done the same thing but the breaks didn't fall their way.''

Over the years, Steubenville's football teams have been known for their ability to run the football. Ironically, they might have won the championship this season because of the Stallions' concern about the passing game. "We were really afraid of his (Collaros) ability to throw the football, but he really burned us with his feet,'' DeSales Coach Bob Jacoby said. Over the first 14 games, Collaros, just a junior, had set school records for passing yards and touchdowns in a single season. Even, Sacccoccia - a run-minded coach from the old school of football - admitted he had to be reminded that it was time for Big Red to pin back their ears and do what they do best in order to win this game.

After a scoreless first half, Saccoccia claimed he had underestimated his team's physical strength against the bigger Stallions' line. "We decided to run the ball straight at them,'' he added. The strategy worked perfectly and when the defense continued to play superbly except for one series, it was obvious that Steubenville would be taking the championship trophy home as well. Matt Belardine returned the second half kickoff to the Big Red 43 and Steubenville needed just seven plays - all runs - to move 57 yards and go in front 7-0. There was nothing special about the first six runs, just hard-nosed, chain-moving Jefferson County style football.

Tamawi McGhee ripped off 11 yards to the 24, and on the next play, Collaros was touching down the football in the end zone. He began with the play with one of his typical good ball fakes that drew the defense toward the line. The Big Red QB then rolled right, found the hole and took over for the goal line.

A beautiful seal block from all-stater Angelo Magnone cleared Collaros's path. Steve Rose came on and nearly rocketed the conversion kick out of the stadium for a 7-0 advantage just 2:13 into the third quarter. Less than three minutes later, the score was 15-0 with the defense taking the honors this time. DeSales was forced into a punting situation and Darrell Longmire broke through to block Drew McNally's kick.

Sam Busic was the first Steubenville player to get his hands on the ball but it came loose when he was hit. It bounced forward only to see Longmire pick it up and take it the final 30 yards for the touchdown. On the PAT conversion, holder Busic took the snap, stood up and threw a pass to the wide open Dan Vogel in the end zone for the two points. DeSales proved it wasn't finished at this point, although it took a change of character for its offense to finally score a touchdown. Stellar Quarterback Matt Mangini, who had passed for six TDs and ran for 17 in the first 14 games, rifled a pass over the middle to Chris Thomas circling out of the backfield for a play that covered 60 yards to the Big Red 5.

After Thomas was dropped for a yard loss, Mangini ran a quarterback draw up the middle to reach paydirt. A.J. Principe's conversion trimmed the Steubenville advantage to 15-7 with still 4:30 on the clock in the third quarter.

Big Red then salted the game away with a lengthy drive that again featured mostly running plays before Collaros found sophomore Anthony Gossett in the back of the end zone for a 5-yard score. It was the second TD catch in as many weeks for Gossett. The scoring march, which began with the kickoff following DeSales' score, consumed 16 plays, 80 yards and a total of 8:07 of clock time. Rose's conversion attempt was blocked this time, leaving the score at 21-7 with only 7:53 remaining.

Belardine, who blocked a Stallions field goal attempt in the first half, intercepted a tipped Mangini pass at the Steubenville 39 and returned it 26 yards to the DeSales 35 to set up the game's final touchdown. It was also the prettiest run of the day. Collaros took the direct snap, rolled right and cut back against the grain all the way to the left sideline as he stepped into the end zone to complete a 28-yard scoring run. Rose's kick ended the scoring with 4:07 left.

McGhee, a junior, was the rushing leader for Steubenville with 79 yards on 16 carries. Mangini accounted for 88 yards on 23 rushes to pace the Stallions. "They challenged us in every way,'' Jacoby said. "We hung with them first half, but they got an edge in the special teams and that swung momentum in their favor,'' he added. The only disappointment for Big Red occurred when senior tailback/defensive back Jeremy Presley was helped off the field with an ankle injury early in the second half. He was later sent to the hospital to determine the extent of the injury. "We played a good team in what was a very physical game,'' Saccoccia said. "I only wish Jeremy was here at the end to enjoy this,'' he added.

Entering the game, the season-long cry of the fans proclaimed was "Tradition on a Mission.'' While driving out of the parking lot, you couldn't notice a message on the back window of a station wagon filled with Big Red supporters.

It read: "Mission Accomplished.''\
