Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Kansas City Chiefs running back Priest Holmes may be forced into retirement because of a lump found on his spine that could make him prone to being paralyzed.

KSHB-TV sports director Jack Harry, citing a "highly placed source", is reporting that Holmes could announce his retirement as early as Thursday.

Holmes missed this past Sunday's game against the Oakland Raiders because of a concussion he suffered a week earlier in a loss to the San Diego Chargers. Apparently, an MRI found the lump on his spine. He reportedly returned to the Kansas City area on Tuesday after traveling to Miami to have tests on his spine.

On the season, Holmes has 451 rushing yards and six touchdowns on the ground. He has also caught 21 passes for 197 yards and an additional score. Larry Johnson would serve as the primary running back if Holmes' career is over.

KSHB's web site said that Chiefs head coach Dick Vermeil didn't know on Tuesday specifics of Holmes' ailment. Last week, Vermeil said he didn't want Holmes to return to the field until he was 100 percent healthy.

I'm reading now that it looks like Priest is out for the year but not retiring.

Each week it seems that more and more teams are having to rely on multiple RBs. KC has been using the two back system and look at what Denver has been doing and Miami and even the Cowboys had a big game from Marion Barber two weeks ago after Julius Jones went down. The trend of having two #1 type backs is probably going to become the norm.
