Connecticut, Villanova and Louisville lead packed Big East Conference
New York, NY– November 3, 2005 – It may be the beginning of November, but odds makers and basketball fans are already thinking madly ahead to March. Sportsbook.com has posted odds on who will win the 2006 Final Four tournament and be declared national champions of the college hoops world.
Duke is the early bet among most pundits and is listed as 4-1 favorites at Sportsbook.com. Duke returns several standout players like J.J. Reddick and Sheldon Williams to complement another strong recruiting class and one of the greatest coaches in basketball history. But Duke’s run to a national title will likely have to go through one of three incredibly talented Big East teams.
Connecticut (a 9-1bet) led by Josh Boone and Rudy Gay, a possible number one overall pick in next year’s NBA draft, Villanova (10-1) which returns all five starters from last year’s sweet sixteen team and Louisville (12-1), a Final Four team last season and new member to the Big East conference, will all challenge for supremacy in what is sure to be another exciting season of college basketball.
“Everybody loves to bet on these games and on paper, Duke is the favorite but there are easily 10 to 15 teams that could win, including any number of teams from the Big East, Big 12 or Big 10,” said Alex Czajkowski, Marketing Director, Sportsbook.com. “Duke has the advantage now because the ACC conference is weak compared to some of the others this year. So Duke could breeze into March a lot more rested and less banged up to face the other top teams who would have fought harder to get there.”
Other teams to watch for include a Final Four team from last season, Michigan State, listed at 12-1 along with Texas. Interestingly, Texas has a legitimate shot at winning both the NCAA basketball and football titles in the same season, a feat that has never been accomplished. The Longhorn football team is currently undefeated and ranked number 2 in the country.
Oklahoma at 12-1 and Arizona, Kentucky and Illinois at 25-1 round out the top ten with Kansas and UCLA at 30-1. Defending champion North Carolina (40-1) is not expected to make a serious challenge for a repeat, having lost its top four players to the NBA. Illinois, last year’s finalist also lost key players to the pros but the team has a few experienced starters, including All American candidate Dee Brown.
