NO. 3 VIRGINIA TECH at MARYLAND
Maryland (4-2 straight-up, 3-3 against the spread) looks to knock Virginia Tech from the ranks of the unbeaten tonight when it welcomes the Hokies (6-0, 5-1 ATS) to College Park for this nationally televised ACC clash. Virginia Tech is an 11-point favorite, and the total is 48.
Both teams have been idle since notching blowout victories Oct. 8. The Hokies crushed Marshall 41-14, failing to cover as five-touchdown home favorites, absorbing their first ATS setback of the season, while the Terps pummeled Temple 38-7 as a 28-point road chalk.
Last year, Virginia Tech obliterated Maryland 55-6 in Blacksburg, easily covering as 10½-point favorites in a prime-time contest, handing Maryland's Ralph Friedgen the worst loss of his coaching career. The Hokies finished with a 376-197 yardage edge, forced five turnovers (leading to 31 points) and were up 55-3 at the end of three quarters. The win started a nine-game ATS winning streak that ended two Saturday's ago against Marshall.
After a slow start (1-2 SU, 0-3 ATS), Maryland has rebounded to win and cover three straight games, including two on the road. Ralph Friedgen's crew is 1-2 SU and ATS in three games in College Park.
The Terps' defense has yielded at least 28 points per game at home against offenses not nearly as scary as the one Virginia Tech fields (365 yards, 39 points per game).
Maryland, which is averaging 414 yards and 28.5 points per outing, has outgained every opponent this season except West Virginia, which held a slim 46-yard edge in total offense in a 31-19 win back on Sept. 17.
Terps QB Sam Hollenbach is completing 65.5 percent of his passes for 1,521 yards, but his seven TDs have been offset by seven INTs.
Since a season-opening four-point win at N.C. State, Frank Beamer's team has won five consecutive games by an average of 35.6 points.
The Hokies, who have won 14 consecutive regular season games, have been particularly dominant on defense, as they lead the nation in scoring defense (nine points per game) and rank second to Miami (Fla.) in total defense (235.5 yards per game). No team has put up more than 17 points on the V-Tech defense this year.
Marcus Vick has been outstanding in his first full season as the Hokies' starting QB, completing 68 percent of his throws for 1,044 yards with 10 TDs and two INTs (the team's only two turnovers this season). He's also contributed two TDs on the ground.
The Hokies' defense and special teams have contributed five TDs this season.
Virginia Tech is on spread runs of 8-1 on the road and 5-1 as a road favorite (3-0 this year). Beamer's bunch has also won nine consecutive Thursday night games, covering the spread in all but one of them.
Maryland is 1-3 SU and ATS following a bye week, averaging just 11 points in those contests.
The Hokies lead the ACC's Coastal Division by one game over Miami of Florida, while Maryland (2-1 ACC) needs a win to move into a three-way tie with Boston College and Florida State atop the Atlantic Division.
After its first two games of the season stayed under the total, Virginia Tech has gone over the posted price in four straight outings. Maryland has gone over in four of its six contests, including all three at home.
Virginia Tech's Frank Beamer and Maryland's Ralph Friedgen have long ties, having both started their careers as graduate assistants at Maryland. The later served as assistant coaches at The Citadel from 1973-78, and Friedgen late was Beamer's defensive coordinator for one year at Murray State (1981).
