I hope this is not seen as gratuitous advice. But I have learned a few things betting on tennis over the past three years. Take it or leave it. I am sure Corey has more experience...
A. The tournaments leading up to the US Open this year are loaded. I have found that in men's tennis in paticular, over 5 sets, talent almost always wins out. Much more predictable than any 3 set match. The Cincy tourney is real dangerous this year:18 0f the top 20 there or something like that???
B. I think the women's game seems almost more treacherous, despite not being as deep as the men's side. I suspect it again goes back to the three set format:let's face it, you lose a set 6-1, so what? all you have to do is win two sets in women's tennis, not three out of the next four as in men's majors. By the way this tournament seems awfully loaded with talent as well. There do not seem to be many real gimmes, and what ones there are are priced astronomically, as they should be.
I hope I do not come off as some wanna be sage. I am hardly that. I tend to make my money on a few select people, and I tend to hammer the early rounds hard. for obvious reasons. I love the mental toughness of Henin on the women's side, for example.I also love Nadal's grittiness (and talent!!), and Hewitt's competitiveness.Federer is so good you can't bet on him anymore almost.
I also blew a damn unit on Golovin's choke job.I hate talent without guts.
GL. Are picks for one unit (earned) or one unit bet? hang in there... :gulp:

INDEED!!! And it's a damn shame. You can only really hope he loses a set or two and take him to win 2-1 3-1 or 3-2. Either that or take him to win a tourney in the very beginning from anywhere between -200 to +150. :bang:

Horatio - Great points. Women's side is just truly unpredictable. There is great value always in women's tennis with dogs. Books just don't know how to set the lines straights. On the Women's side injuries have had a huge role this season as a significant amount of players have been carrying injuries and it shows in the results. One of the biggest problems betting on women's tennis is the talent field is extremely deep. There are 15 and 16 year old girls who are more then capable of beating a top ranked player at anytime. Serving is another issue. There are so few decent servers in the women's game which makes every match so difficult. Personally I'm taking a break till the US Open. I want to see another week of play for both the men and women on the hard surfaces. I'll be back for qualifying US open matches if offered if not i'll definetly around for the Open.
Outlaw - Hang in there. Alot of tough matches this week. Alot of 3 setters and hard matchups making the choices very difficult. Good Luck!!!!

The only time you can bet on Federer is clay season and that's it. The rest of his lines are just ridiculous. Nadal has pretty much gotten the same way as well.

I made a few coins on Nadal early, because I knew he was an amazingly strong player(look at the pipes on that guy:looks like a football player's set of bicepts).I had no idea he would go undefeated this year on clay, however. His and Federer's records are absolutely insane.Plus I always like a good lefthander, as playing them was always hell for me.
Tennis is such a mental game I tend to really like guys who continue to grind away. Coria is a guy that never seems to give up (but he got whacked today!).If you guys have noticed players that just never quit on a point, or a match, I would love to see what you think.
Talent wise, I think Safin is with Nadal and Federer, but that is only in pure talent. The guy is so mercurial I hate betting on him but tend to take a chance on him early. He truly has superb physical gifts, with power on both backhand and forehand, and an effective serve.
I like to catch on early to rising players:tennis is now has some absurdly young great players. Just like riding Nadal as his career started to catch fire, I would love to ride the hot hand of the up and coming players who will be stars. Gasquet comes to mind there, as does Joachim Johansson, although he seems to have slipped a bit.We need to indentify the players who are right on the cusp of breaking through, and go for it while their lines remain reasonable.
Sorry to ramble.I love tennis and I have enjoyed betting on it. But these two tournies are very dangerous and I am wagering very small. I want to be very ready for the 5 setters at the US Open where I think things are usually much more predicated on talent and conditioning, and the better player almost always wins.
