THURSDAY'S GAME 8/11/05
San Diego Chargers - QB Rotation: Drew Brees (1st Q), Philip Rivers (2-3 Qs), Cleo Lemon, Craig Ochs (mop up).
Marty Schottenheimer said Drew Brees probably will play the first quarter of Thursday's game, with Philip Rivers getting the next two. Cleo Lemon and possibly Craig Ochs will play the fourth quarter.
It's "not likely" RB Ladainian Tomlinson will play, Schottenheimer said. No surprise there – the All-Pro running back has only 13 carries in exhibition games during his four-year NFL career.
Green Bay Packers - QB Rotation: Brett Favre, Craig Nall, J.T. O'Sullivan, rookie Aaron Rodgers.
The Packers have been giving rookie QB Aaron Rodgers a lot of snaps in practice. They have him second behind Favre when it comes to receiving practice snaps. Favre practices once a day and receives 50% of the snaps, with Rodgers receiving 25%. In the afternoon session, Rodgers, Nall and O'Sullivan split the snaps evenly.
Nose tackle Grady Jackson remains on the physically unable to perform list.
Secondary thin. The Packers are down to five healthy cornerbacks, and unless they get projected starters Al Harris (thigh) and Joey Thomas (calf) back soon, they're going to be perilously thin at the position.
Jim Bates is the Packers new Defensive Coordinator, their third new one in three years. The defense is running more coverages than the basic two-deep scheme of a year ago.
FRIDAY'S GAMES 8/12/05
Detroit Lions - QB Rotation: Joey Harrington, Jeff Garcia, rookie Dan Orlovsky (exact amount of playing time still to be determined).
QB Dan Orlovsky won't get a lot of snaps.
HC Steve Mariucci said RB Kevin Jones and WR Roy Williams, first-round picks in 2004, were "light-years" ahead of where they were last year. "They're more confident," he said. "They get it. They understand what we're asking. I expect terrific years from guys like Roy and Kevin Jones."
Ted Tollner is the new offensive coordinator.
NY Jets - QB Rotation: Chad Pennington, Jay Fiedler, Brooks Bollinger.
Mike Heimerdinger, the former offensive coordinator with the Titans, is the new offensive coordinator.
QB Chad Pennington is not throwing well in practice, especially on long passes. Pennington, seven months removed from surgery on his right shoulder, has struggled on his deep balls, with three interceptions on five attempts in training camp. Pennington admits he's only 85%, expects to be 100% by opening day, and said he's more concerned at this point with making the right reads.
The Jets secondary, once a question mark, is suddenly looking like a team strength with the addition of Ty Law, rookie CB Justin Miller, rookie safeties Kerry Rhodes and Andre Maddox and the emergence of first-year S Oliver Celestin. Law and David Barrett will start at cornerback with Miller as the third cornerback. Second-year pro Derrick Strait replaces Ray Mickens at nickel. Second-year man Eric Coleman, a starter last season, and Celestin are the starters at safety. Celestin can also play some cornerback/nickel back.
New England Patriots - QB Rotation: Tom Brady, Doug Flutie, Rohan Davey, rookie Matt Cassel (exact amount of playing time still to be determined).
Doug Flutie has received just as many second-team reps as Rohan Davey. Unfortunately, neither Flutie nor Davey has looked sharp. Davey still has huge arm strength, but his accuracy isn't there. Meanwhile, rookie seventh-round pick Matt Cassel has impressed, and some days he's been the second-best quarterback on the field. He'll be closely watched in the exhibitions.
Linebackers in transition: It will be easier for the Pats to replace retired LB Ted Johnson than Tedy Bruschi. Both played inside linebacker. Bruschi's replacement at weakside inside linebacker could be free-agent pickup Monte Beisel. But in training camp Beisel is sharing reps with new LB Chad Brown, and outside LB Mike Vrabel is also being tried inside.
Cincinnati Bengals - QB Rotation: Carson Palmer, Jon Kitna, Casey Bramlet, Craig Krenzel.
For the first time since 1997, the Bengals have the same primary signal caller as the previous season. Carson Palmer missed the final three games of last season with strained knee ligaments but is completely healthy. Jon Kitna gives the Bengals comfort at No. 2, the real battle of camp will be for No. 3, where Casey Bramlet and newly acquired Craig Krenzel are competing.
Chicago Bears - QB Rotation: Rex Grossman, Chad Hutchinson, rookie Kyle Orton, Kurt Kittner.
This is the Bears second preseason game (played Miami Monday). In the Miami game, Orton, Grossman and Hutchinson combined for 376 yards on 22-of-41 passing.
The Bears have a new offensive coordinator in Ron Turner, the former Illinois Head Coach. He is bringing in his version of the West Coast offense. His offense is geared toward receivers as opposed to backs and tight ends in the passing game.
QB Chad Hutchinson has impressed in training camp. Coach Lovie Smith also praised rookie QB Kyle Orton, who has a strong arm and is starting to streamline his mechanics. Orton worked primarily out of the shotgun at Purdue, so the fourth-round pick has had to adjust to taking the snap from center. He still needs to get quicker in his drop and his release.
St. Louis Rams - QB Rotation: Marc Bulger, Jamie Martin, Jeff Smoker, rookie Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Secondary thin: CB Travis Fisher has discomfort in his groin. Fisher's counterpart on the first-team defense, CB Jerametrius Butler, is sidelined with a bruised knee.
Mike Martz shuffles the offensive line: Last week Rex Tucker was the left guard, Darnell Alford was the right guard and Blaine Saipaia the right tackle on the Rams' first unit. Just two days later, Claude Terrell was running with the "ones" at left guard and Saipaia was at right guard, with Grant Williams at right tackle. Eventually, rookie Alex Barron is expected to man the right tackle position in '05, but Barron has missed five days and nine practices of training camp. "My biggest concern in the offensive line," coach Mike Martz said. "Right now, we've got a rookie starting left guard (Terrell). If he's the best player, then he's going to play."
K.C. Chiefs - QB Rotation: Trent Green, Todd Collins, Damon Huard and rookie James Kilian (exact amount of playing time still to be determined).
Offensive line in transition: Will Shields, the longtime foundation of the Chiefs’ line, hasn’t been on the practice field because of a bad back. They also have a new starter at right tackle, though HC Vermeil is more confident that situation will resolve itself. The Chiefs are happy with Kevin Sampson, who will probably win the job over Jordan Black.
Defensive line thin.
Running back Priest Holmes (leg bruise) did not practice Monday.
Minnesota Vikings - QB Rotation: Daunte Culpepper, Brad Johnson, Shaun Hill.
WRs thin: Short on healthy wide receivers, the Vikings placed No. 1 draft choice Troy Williamson into the mix this week.
Center thin with Matt Birk and Kyle Schmidt out.
WR Travis Taylor was expected to open this season as a backup to Nate Burleson and as the team's No. 3 wide receiver, but the game plan might be changing. After watching Taylor catch a team-high seven passes for 93 yards and two touchdowns in Friday's scrimmage, Tice said Taylor is pushing Marcus Robinson for the starting outside receiver job.
Seattle Seahawks - QB Rotation: Matt Hasselbeck, Seneca Wallace, Gilbran Hamdan, rookie David Greene.
Running backs thin. The Seahawks have been getting by with only two healthy running backs in practice, Kerry Carter and Marquis Weeks, an undrafted rookie free agent from Virginia. Shaun Alexander and Maurice Morris could be back from sore hamstrings any day, but Jesse Lumsden figures to be out for two weeks with a hip injury. That means significant snaps for Weeks, who couldn't have expected so much work in his first pro training camp.
LBs thin: Due to injuries, the Seahawks had only six linebackers at practice after Soloman Bates was waived.
New Orleans Saints - QB Rotation: Aaron Brooks (1 Q), Todd Bouman (2nd Q), Kliff Kingsbury (3rd Q), rookie Adrian McPherson (4 Q).
QB Aaron Brooks will start and Todd Bouman will follow by the second quarter. Kingsbury and McPherson will see time and all 4 QBs have had good practices.
The injury to Ernie Conwell was the second in recent days to a key member of the offense. In the scrimmage Saturday, WR Az-Zahir Hakim injured his right hamstring while finishing a 26-yard catch. Jim Haslett said Monday that Hakim has a slight hamstring pull, but did not know how long he'll be sidelined. Hakim is unlikely to play in the exhibition opener Friday.
Tampa Bay Bucs - QB Rotation: Brian Griese, Chris Simms, Luke McCown.
Offensive line thin. General Manager Bruce Allen said the offensive line injuries are a cause for concern, and he'll "try to bring in some reserves" to help out with the reps at practice. The Bucs have had to scramble to put together a first and second unit for team drills.
The Bucs tied for last in the league in field-goal efficiency last year and despite an array of changes aimed at improving the kicking game, early impressions aren't encouraging. Matt Bryant and Todd France, Bryant's challenger for the placekicking job, have struggled.
Tennessee Titans - QB Rotation: Steve McNair, Billy Volek, rookie Gino Guidugli (see below).
QB Steve McNair will get some early work, followed by Billy Volek, and rookie Gino Guidugli will be the third QB in line. QB Shane Boyd will be fourth in line, though the Titans rarely make it that deep. Jason White is unlikely to play.
As for three Titans coming off serious knee injuries — WR Tyrone Calico, safety Tank Williams and offensive lineman Jacob Bell — Jeff Fisher said Friday will probably be too soon for them to play.
Fisher said Ola Kimrin and Rob Bironas will both get a chance to kick off and will likely alternate on field goal attempts.
Titans QB Steve McNair has come to camp roughly 25 pounds lighter than he was last season, helping his quickness.
Norm Chow is the new offensive coordinator.
SATURDAY'S GAMES 8/13/05
Baltimore Ravens - QB Rotation: Kyle Boller, Anthony Wright, rookie Derek Anderson (exact amount of playing time still to be determined).
RB Jamal Lewis is expected to report after meeting with a probation officer in Baltimore this week. It will be determined after his physical whether he will be placed on the physically-unable-to-perform list. He had ankle surgery this offseason.
QBs Boller and Wright threw 6 interceptions in Tuesday's practice. Said coach Brian Billick, "The good news is my team intercepted the passes. The bad news is my team threw them."
New defensive coordinator Rex Ryan has done a great job of disguising his fourth pass rusher. With both Terrell Suggs and Adalius Thomas both able to play defensive end and outside linebacker, it's hard to tell which one is dropping into coverage and who is pressuring the quarterback.
Atlanta Falcons - QB Rotation: Michael Vick (1-2 series), Ty Detmer (2 Q+), Matt Schaub (3rd Q+).
The Falcons played in Japan a week ago in their preseason opener. This is the first preseason game for the Ravens.
Michael Vick won't see much playing time again. Mora gave no indication how much he plans on using Vick in the preseason, but Vick may have already taken the most snaps he will take over the four remaining exhibitions.
Vick has said he feels far more comfortable entering his second season in offensive coordinator Greg Knapp's West Coast offense and Mora said the fluidity and familiarity in the way the first-team offense performed against the Colts Saturday was a good sign.
Miami Dolphins - QB Rotation: Gus Frerotte (1st Q), A.J. Feeley, (2nd Q), Sage Rosenfels, Brock Berlin.
This is the second preseason game for Miami, the first for Jacksonville.
The offensive line was weak in the opener. It couldn't protect Feeley and didn't generate much of a running game.
Offensive line thin: The Dolphins, in search of help along their battered offensive line, signed free agent Frank Middleton. Backup center Wade Smith fractured his forearm Monday and is out. Joining Smith on the list of injured Dolphins centers was third-stringer Jason Thomas (arthroscopic knee surgery). With both players out, the Dolphins signed center Alonzo Ephraim. Saban also said right guard Rex Hadnot would get plenty of reps at center. Backup guard John St. Clair also has practiced at center.
Scott O'Brien will run Miami's offense, after serving as Vikings' offensive coordinator. Defensively, Miami changed from a 4-3 to a 3-4.
Jacksonville Jaguars - QB Rotation: Byron Leftwich, David Garrard, Quinn Gray, Nate Hybl.
Byron Leftwich, who was held out of Thursday night's passing drills to rest a tired arm, threw just six passes in Friday night's scrimmage and took just a handful of snaps in the mock game Saturday morning. Nate Hybl is competing with Quinn Gray for the Jaguars' No.3 QB job behind starter Byron Leftwich and No.2 David Garrard.
RB Fred Taylor is recovering from surgery to repair two knee ligaments. He won't play Saturday.
Secondary thin: Starting right CB David Richardson was carted off the field Monday with an ankle injury.
Carl Smith is the new offensive coordinator. He is a proponent of play action, something you will see a lot with his QBs in preseason. Smith said, "We're going to use the whole field this season."
Buffalo Bills - QB Rotation: J.P. Losman, Kelly Holcomb, Shane Matthews, Tory Woodbury, Kevin Thompson (exact amount of playing time still to be determined).
QB J.P. Losman passed his first test Friday in a scrimmage against the Green Bay Packers. Losman completed 6 of 9 passes for 67 yards.
Offensive line thin: Guards Lawrence Smith and Ben Sobieski were ruled out for the year.
Defensive Coordinator Jerry Gray let loose with an array of blitzes, many basic in design but very effective, while backup nose tackle Justin Bannan had a big night with three would-be takedowns.
Indianapolis Colts - QB Rotation: Peyton Manning, Jim Sorgi, Travis Brown (exact playing time still to be determined).
The Colts played in Japan a week ago in their preseason opener. This is the opener for Buffalo.
Seven defensive starters missed the Indianapolis Colts' 27-21 preseason loss to Atlanta on Saturday. "Very sloppy," Dungy said. "I thought we would be ready to play. That's why I was disappointed we didn't play better."
Secondary is thin, and young. Joe Jefferson has moved from cornerback to safety to replace Mike Doss, who will sit out the first two games of the regular season (suspension). Second-year man Bob Sanders is the other safety, and rookie Marlin Jackson played well. Jackson started for Nick Harper (foot). With Donald Strickland (hamstring) also out, CB Kevin Hayden was the Colts' third corner.
Denver Broncos - QB Rotation: Jake Plummer (10 plays), Brad Van Pelt, Danny Kanell, Matt Mauck.
The starters likely will go about 10 plays Saturday in the preseason opener.
QB Jake Plummer is fine after suffering a slightly hyperextended left knee, the knee he had arthroscopic surgery on in May. If Plummer is still sore, he could be limited or held out of practice. The Broncos will practice with the Texans in Houston on Wednesday and Thursday. If Plummer sits, former Colorado State star Brad Van Pelt likely will work with the No. 1 offense. Plummer ran the starting offense in both workouts Monday.
QB Van Pelt improved his abilities throwing the ball and is in the No. 2 role to see if he can handle being the first option behind Jake Plummer. Danny Kanell had filled that role previously and still took some snaps behind the second-team offensive line. It's clear Van Pelt was the first choice in most drills.
RB Mike Anderson is getting most of the carries with the starting offense.
Defense not 100%: CB Champ Bailey (left hamstring), defensive tackle Mario Fatafehi (left knee) and DE Courtney Brown (left elbow) were held out of both workouts Monday.
Houston Texans - QB Rotation: David Carr, Tony Banks, Dave Ragone, B.J. Symons (exact amount of playing time still to be determined).
Houston wants to improve its running game. In preseason games, they want to see RBs rookie Vernand Morency and Tony Hollings as much as possible.
The Texans made moves on defense to improve the pass rush. Dom Capers and DC Vic Fangio said they want to improve quickness and speed, so players were added through the draft (lineman Travis Johnson), free agency (LB Morlon Greenwood) and a trade (CB Phillip Buchanon). They will be looking for more sacks this preseason. If Buchanon and CB Dunta Robinson can provide the kind of man-to-man coverage Fangio wants, he can commit more players to the pass rush.
NY Giants - QB Rotation: Eli Manning, Jesse Palmer, Tim Hasselbeck, Jared Lorenzen.
Much of Tom Coughlin's energy this camp has been devoted to keeping his team healthier and fresher. There have been far fewer days with two practices, more time to heal between sessions with the addition of night workouts, the slicing of 10 or more minutes off a practice on more than one occasion, and less time in full pads, which means not as much hitting and physical contact.
Receivers thin: TE Jeremy Shockey (mild hamstring strain) missed a practice this week, while WR Tim Carter (hamstring) and WR Jamaar Taylor have not been 100%.
Cleveland Browns - QB Rotation: Trent Dilfer, rookie Charlie Frye, Doug Johnson, Josh Harris (exact amount of playing time still to be determined).
Cleveland has a new head coach in Romeo Crennel, who ran Bill Belichick's defense in New England the past five years. Crennel is switching Cleveland's defensive scheme to a 3-4.
Crennel said rookie QB Frye is in the running for the No. 2 job and has made good progress throughout camp.
RBs Lee Suggs and Reuben Droughns have been used at the same time, both in the backfield and split out wide. "If they make the team, there might be a possibility that we'll use that," said Crennel. "It does put a little pressure on the defense. They have to defend you differently with two halfbacks in the game."
Washington Redskins - QB Rotation: Patrick Ramsey, Mark Brunell, rookie Jason Campbell (see below).
Campbell is the No. 3 quarterback behind starter Patrick Ramsey and backup Mark Brunell. Campbell figures to play extensively this Saturday.
The Redskins are short on cornerbacks with Walt Harris and Artrell Hawkins out with minor injuries and Carlos Rogers (ankle) ailing. "We're definitely thin at corner," Joe Gibbs said.
Carolina Panthers - QB Rotation: Jake Delhomme, Chris Weinke, Rod Rutherford, rookie Stephan LeFlors.
The Panthers like what they see in 6-foot-1, 246-pound rookie RB Eric Shelton. While DeShaun Foster is the acknowledged starter in Stephen Davis' absence, expect Shelton to see plenty of time in preseason.
Dallas Cowboys - QB Rotation: Drew Bledsoe, Drew Henson, Tony Romo.
Cowboys coach Bill Parcells said no one has a lead in the race for the backup quarterback spot. Drew Henson and Tony Romo have struggled with their accuracy early in camp. Romo has never taken a snap in a regular-season game, and Henson has played just one half. Parcells has already given the pair plenty of reps in practice.
Drew Bledsoe has looked sharp at Cowboys camp, teaming up with Terry Glenn on a number of deep passes and with TE Jason Witten on shorter throws. He also is in the best physical condition he's been in in four or five years.
Issues in the secondary: Parcells said he's not even close to deciding who will start at free safety. For now, Lynn Scott and Keith Davis are rotating at the position. CB Lance Frazier (sprained left ankle) is also ailing.
Cowboys nose tackle Jason Ferguson has played well in their new 3-4 defense.
Arizona Cardinals - QB Rotation: Kurt Warner, Josh McCown, John Navarre, Chris Lewis (exact amount of playing time still to be determined).
Dennis Green is working on offense. Kurt Warner will work to find comfort level with WRs Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald.
Oakland Raiders - QB Rotation: Kerry Collins, Marques Tuiasosopo, David Rivers, rookie Andrew Walter (exact amount of playing time still to be determined).
WRs thin with hamstring injuries to Jerry Porter and Carlos Francis.
San Fran 49ers - QB Rotation: Rookie Alex Smith, Brandon Doman, Tim Rattay, Cody Pickett.
HC Mike Nolan seems to be leaning heavily toward Alex Smith starting Saturday, as has taken roughly half the training-camp snaps in team drills. "There is a good chance it will stay with Smith starting for this game," Nolan said.
Offensive line thin: G David Baas (pulled hamstring) might miss training camp. C Jeremy Newberry (knee) is recovering from offseason surgery and is hoping to begin practice next week. LT Jonas Jennings (finger) will miss a week after undergoing surgery Friday to attach muscle to bone. Baas' injury has the most impact. The second-rounder was expected to compete for a starting spot.
Secondary thin: CB Randee Drew has a stress fracture in his foot and is out indefinitely, CB Shawntae Spencer (hamstring) is ailing.
Mike Nolan is the new 49ers head coach (former defensive coordinator with the Baltimore Ravens).
Billy Davis is the new defensive coordinator, Mike McCarthy is the new offensive coordinator.
MONDAY'S GAME 8/15/05
Pittsburgh Steelers - QB Rotation: Ben Roethlisberger, Tommy Maddox, Charlie Batch, Brian St. Pierre (exact amount of playing time still to be determined).
RB Duce Staley underwent surgery yesterday to repair a lateral meniscus tear in his right knee. Pittsburgh coach Bill Cowher expects him to miss a month.
Philadelphia Eagles - QB Rotation: Donovan McNabb, Mike McMahon, Koy Detmer, Andy Hall.
Pro Bowl running back Brian Westbrook ended his week-long holdout and practiced this week. But All-Pro WR Terrell Owens was sidelined after reinjuring his left groin Sunday.
I left out the SD/GB line!
Thu 8/11 461 San Diego Chargers -3 -106 -149 OVER 37.5 +102
05:00 PM 462 Green Bay Packers +3 -104 +139 UNDER 37.5 -112
Chargers have no "key" changes... all major players are still in place.
SD QBs: Brees, Rivers, Lemon, Ochs
SD last year: SD 6th Rushing, 16th Passing, 3rd Rushing D, 31st Passing D
Green Bay has new defensive coordinator -- system will be changed. Also, backup QB competition between Rodgers/Nall/O'Sullivan, and two OL spots have changed.
GB QBs: Favre, Rodgers, Nall, O'Sullivan
GB last year: 10th rushing, 3rd passing, 14th rushing D, 25th passing D.
Schottenheimer is anxious to get quarterbacks Philip Rivers and Cleo Lemon some extensive work, but the coach said that Drew Brees will likely play through the first quarter Thursday. Rivers is expected to play the second and third frames with Lemon finishing things in the fourth. It’s likely that Craig Ochs will also see time in the fourth quarter.
Rivers simply lacked sharpness. He missed receivers with his throws and his eyes. He was intercepted three times in about as many minutes.
If this were truly a competition between him and Drew Brees, it would be tempting to say it was finished.
There are some video clips I'm going to watch and I'll update this if necessary.
Quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and J.T. O'Sullivan will handle most of the throws on Thursday with Rodgers taking the snaps once Favre heads to the bench. That will allow those quarterbacks to play more than a couple of series and find their rhythm.
"We definitely want to see more of J.T and Aaron," Rossley said. "Rather than try and play all four of them. I think it's easier to give them games."
Craig Nall likely will not see any time. But he has played four seasons with the Packers, and the team does not need to evaluate him as thoroughly. Instead much of the focus will rest on the rookie quarterback Rodgers, who struggled through a 1-for-7 performance against the Buffalo Bills during Friday's "Family Night" scrimmage.
"He's a fast learner," Rossley said. "And we'll see how fast he learned tomorrow night."
Although the Packers passed on 30 of their 51 plays during last week's scrimmage versus the Bills, they will emphasize the running game on Thursday.
"The run is going to be a big part of what we do tomorrow night," Rossley said.

Good info RJP.
Detroit's QBs: Harrington, Garcia, Orlovsky (rookie)
Detroit's 2004 stats: 19th rushing O, 23rd passing O, 15th rushing D, 20th passing D
Key changes: new offensive coordinator Ted Tollner expected to air it out more; QB competition between Harrington and Garcia
“We do very little game-planning early and late in the preseason,” said Mariucci. “The game we will prepare for the most would be our third game – this is very typical around the league. The third one is where games are played with ones against ones for maybe a half, sometimes even longer than that. You actually go through a routine of the week where it’s similar to regular season preparation. That would be for the third preseason game and this game [against the Jets] is not quite like that.”
One thing fans can look forward to over the next four games is a preview of the Lions offense with many solid acquisitions. The offense will remain the same as it has been under Mariucci, but the addition of offensive coordinator Ted Tollner is giving quarterback Joey Harrington a little more freedom to throw downfield. Though Harrington likes this added freedom, he understands that he has to mix going deep with shorter passes in order to win.
Even if there isn't true competition for the starting quarterback job, it will be interesting to evaluate and compare how Joey Harrington and Jeff Garcia perform against the Jets tonight in the Meadowlands.
Both probably will play about a quarter. Rookie Dan Orlovsky will finish.
"I would like to be very efficient," Harrington said. "I'd like to put a good drive together in the first quarter."
Coach Steve Mariucci wants Garcia to play with the starters at some point during the exhibition season. Tonight is a good time for that.
"I'm going to show this team -- my teammates, my coaches -- that I'm a starting quarterback," Garcia said. "That's all that I can say I'm here to do."
Rookie fifth-round draft choice Dan Orlovsky is expected to get the bulk of playing time.

thank you for the info
Jets QBs: Chad Pennington, Jay Fiedler, Brooks Bollinger
Jets 2004 stats: 3rd rushing O, 22nd passing O, 5th rushing D, 14th passing D
Key changes: New offensive coordinator Heinerdinger brings attacking offense
the coaching staff will keep quarterback Chad Pennington out of the game in order to give his throwing shoulder some more rest, and a handful of other Jets players will be withheld from action as well.
“There will be some guys who will be held out due to the fact that they’re not in shape yet, Ty Law being one of them,” Edwards said. “Dewayne Robertson and I had a good talk. He’s fine; he will not need surgery. He will be a game-time decision. Wayne Chrebet and Jonathan Carter won’t play due to hamstring strains. Eric Barton won’t play because he has some tendonitis in his knee. And Andre Maddox strained his hamstring last night, so it’s a wait-and-see situation with him. But other than that, everyone else will participate in the game.
“The starters will probably play 15-20 plays. Some guys will play a little bit longer, some might play less. But generally that’s how we do it.”
"Obviously Jay (Fiedler) is going to play a lot. Chad will not play this game," Edwards said Tuesday. "I would think we’re going to try to get them all in. How that goes, I don’t know yet. Brooks Bollinger will take most of the snaps after Jay comes out and we’ll go from there."
Nugent, the Jets' second-round draft choice out of Ohio State, is the marquee attraction because the Jets identified field goal kicker as their most pressing need the moment Doug Brien became their modern-day Scott Norwood that cold, cruel night in Pittsburgh when an invitation to the AFC championship game sailed wide left.
Offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger: The shotgun will be the first clue that Paul Hackett is gone. The tight end going deep down the middle will be the second clue.
With Pennington resting, Jay Fiedler will start at quarterback and play about a quarter, followed by third-stringer Brooks Bollinger. This isn't Fiedler's first rodeo; he made 60 career starts with the Dolphins.
QBs: Tom Brady, Chris Redman, Doug Flutie, Rohan Davey, Matt Cassel
2004 stats: 7th rushing O, 11th passing O, 6th rushing D, 17th passing D
Key changes: new offensive and defensive coordinators; Belichick will be offensive coordinator; secondary coach Mangini will be defensive coordinator; starting units intact except for LG, CB, and LB.
Tom Curran of the Providence Journal reports that the Patriots go into tonights preseason opener against the Bengals with some uncertainty in regards to Tom Brady. Felger notes that the quarterback barely through at all during camp this week and was spotted wearing a black compression sleeve on his arm during Tuesday morning's workout. Felger also digresses to say the lack of throwing this week may also be to give QB's Rohan Davey, Matt Cassel and Doug Flutie more reps to better learn responsibilities against Cincinnati tonight.
Alan Greenberg of the Hartford Courant offers a story on Patriots rookie quarterback Matt Cassel, who looks to make his debut during tonights preseason opener. Cassel has looked very sharp in practice and it will be interesting to see how that all translates on to the field during tonights game.
Many of the team's veteran stars (Tom Brady, Corey Dillon, Richard Seymour, and Harrison) could play as little as one series. And players who sat out practices this week with what Belichick announced as minor injuries (Ty Warren, Ben Watson, and P.K. Sam) will not play.
Flutie and Davey have each looked sluggish in practice. The two should play a similar amount tonight, with Cassel, a rookie, cleaning up late.
Cassel, who spent his entire career at Southern California as a reserve, has little game experience, so some ragged play would be no surprise. The better he performs, the more pressure Flutie and Davey are under to earn the No. 2 spot.
Nervous rookies, ragged play, and extended garbage time? That's preseason in the NFL.
The quarterbacks. Doug Flutie has been working ahead of Rohan Davey and has improved his play of late. For Davey to move back ahead, he'll have to dramatically improve his career preseason completion percentage (47.3).
As for the second half, all eyes will be on Matt Cassel. The rookie seventh-round pick has been impressive in practice, although he's had plenty of experience in that regard as a five-year backup at USC. Everyone will be watching to see how he responds when the game starts.
Don't expect to see Tom Brady for more than a series or two.
QBs: Carson Palmer, Jon Kitna, Casey Bramlet
2004 stats: 17th rushing O, 17th passing O, 26th rushing D, 13th passing D
Key changes: new defensive coordinator Chuck Bresnahan; all 5 starting offensive linemen return
Starters might not play more than a quarter. Bengals coach Marvin Lewis has not said how much action his first-string players will see.
"I'll judge that during the game," he said. "We are excited."
Not much news out of Cincinnati, lol

Nice work man. Thanks for all the info.
There's plenty more coming. LOL
QBs: Grossman, Hutchinson, Orton
2004 stats: 25th rushing O, 32nd passing O, 25th rushing D, 15th passing D
Key changes: New offensive coordinator Ron Turner
It's pretty simple to figure out that one area the Bears want to improve in tonight is their pass defense.
"This will get us ready the next couple weeks as far as defending the pass,'' coach Lovie Smith said. "It will be a big challenge for our pass rush, and of course the secondary, too.''Smith declined to say how long starters would play against his former team, but about 20 snaps figures to be a good bet.
If there was one area that particularly stood out against Miami, it was the Bears' passing game. They have committed to being a run-first team, but all three quarterbacks played well, and a few drops hurt starter Rex Grossman.Coach Lovie Smith's answer about how much regulars will play Friday against the Rams wasn't specific.
"Without going into detail about how long, we're playing with an extra [exhibition] game," Smith said. "Normally, we play them a little more in the second game. But we haven't decided exactly how long right now. As we told them this week, you're playing until we tell you you're out."
"We went in saying we want to go downfield," offensive coordinator Ron Turner said. "I told our guys that's how we're going to play. We're definitely going to be aggressive and take our shots. If somebody is going to play up and give it to us, we're going to take more. If you can hit some of those, or even if you don't hit sometimes, they help to hopefully back the defense off a little bit."
QBs: Bulger, Martin, Smoker, Fitzpatrick
2004 stats: 25h rushing O, 5th passing O, 29th rushing D, 11th passing D
Key changes: RT and LG are up for grabs
My biggest concern has been the offensive line. Not having Big O is an issue
obviously, but he should be back in short order.
Not a lot from the Rams. They don't do a very good job of covering the team, but Martz doesn't care about the preseason.
QBs: Green, Collins, Huard, Kilian
2004 stats: 5th rushing O, 4th passing O, 12th rushing D, 32nd passing D
Key changes: 5 new players on defense; all but RT returns on OL starting unit.
The Chiefs will have new starters at right guard (probably John Welbourn for the injured Will Shields) and right tackle (Kevin Sampson). The Chiefs believe they will eventually be all right with both players, but the transition might take some time. They will stay basic in their play-calling tonight, but it’s not a good sign if the Chiefs get manhandled up front. The Vikings have invested heavily in their defensive line, so it could happen.Focus in opener will be on defense
"The tackling has to improve," Hicks said. "We gave up too many big plays (because of bad tackling). But I really believe our fundamentals are getting better in this camp. The days of just tagging off on (an offensive teammate) are gone. You see more guys wrapping them up, not letting them run.
QBs: Culpepper, Johnson, Hill
2004 stats: 18th rushing O, 2nd passing O, 21st rushing D, 29th passing D
Key changes: New offensive coordinator Steve Loney to put emphasis on run
Q: How much will the starters play?
A: We're hoping that they'll go out there and have anywhere from 12-15 plays or less.
Q: Do they need more because all of this talk about getting in sync and getting on the same page?
A: Not in this game. We've got a set pattern already, and we're not going to go beyond that. This is the first full contact, full speed contact for all of our guys. So we're still going to work our way into that. The next game may be different. But this game, Mike (Tice) always has a pattern set for the number (of plays), and he's already talked to the players about it also.
QBs: Brian Griese, Chris Simms, Luke McCown (rookie)
2004 stats: 29th rushing O, 14th passing O, 19th rushing D, 1st passing D
Key changes: OL could have 3 first-year starters
The Bucs fully expected Matt Bryant to spend the preseason justifying their decision to make him their new kicker. All Bryant has done so far, though, is make everyone wonder which other kickers might become available as the preseason drags on. A good effort by Bryant tonight will erase a lot of concern. A bad effort could give Todd France a big edge in this position battle and force the Bucs to look more closely at the waiver wire.Only an injury will force the Bucs to open the season with someone other than Brian Griese at quarterback, so this is the opportunity to judge backup Chris Simms. With Simms slated to become a free agent at season's end, the Bucs must make a sound evaluation. Simms will take the majority of the snaps at quarterback during exhibition games, and how he performs will go a long way toward deciding his future with the Bucs.“Brian will start the game and we’re going to give away early to Chris Simms,” said Gruden. “We’d like to see Chris finish the first half, start the third quarter. But again, that could change, you never know. We could go to Luke McCown. We want those guys to feel just like they feel on game day, a snap away from going out and playing. That’s their job.”
QBs: McNair, Volek, Guidugli (rookie)
2004 stats: 14th rushing O, 10th passing O, 18th rushing D, 26th passing D
Key changes: new offensive coordinator Norm Chow; two new DL starters; both CBs replaced.
The Titans have two rookies competing to be their third quarterback with Jason White's retirement Thursday, and Gino Guidugli of Cincinnati will be first into the game after McNair and backup Billy Volek. Fisher needs a new starting right tackle, wide receiver, two cornerbacks and top defensive ends.Titans Coach Jeff Fisher has formulated some of his personnel plans for Friday night's preseason opener against Tampa Bay at the Coliseum.
He said quarterback Steve McNair will get some early work, followed by Billy Volek, and rookie Gino Guidugli will be the third QB in line.
"Gino's done well. He's picking things up," Fisher said. "It's a combination of his turn in the rotation and where we are."
Shane Boyd will be fourth in line, though the Titans rarely make it that deep.
QBs: Matt Hasselbeck, Seneca Wallace, David Greene
2004 stats: 8th rushing O, 13th passing O, 23rd rushing D, 23rd passing D
Key changes: minor defensive changes, but overall still in-tact.
Quarterback. The plan is for starter Matt Hasselbeck to play about one quarter Friday night at New Orleans. Backup Wallace could finish the game. If circumstances permit, the team hopes to let rookie David Greene take a few late snaps.Wallace has already shown he can play well in an exhibition game. Last preseason, he lit up the Green Bay Packers' reserves for 135 yards on 14-of-26 passing, including a touchdown.Other positions that will get the longest looks in the exhibition season are wide receiver, linebacker, punt and kick returner, punter and safety.
QBs: Aaron Brooks, Todd Bouman, Adrian McPherson, Kliff Kingsbury
2004 stats: 27th rushing O, 12th passing O, 30th rushing D, 27th passing D
Key changes: team wants to emphasize a run-oriented scheme (like Pittsburgh); new offensive coordinator Mike Sheppard; new starting RT and RG.
QB Aaron Brooks is expected to play until midway through the second quarter before he gives way to Todd Bouman, who will run the offense until the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter will be split between Kliff Kingsbury and Adrian McPherson. Haslett wants his first-team units to be on the field more than they have in the past in the first three exhibition games.
"We're going to make sure they're ready to go," he said. "We've got a line that hasn't played together too much. We've got to get them squared away." Saints coach Jim Haslett has a new offensive coordinator in Mike Sheppard and a new, simplified, offensive scheme that is expected to emphasize a ground attack led by Deuce McAllister. With those changes taking effect, Haslett said he expected to play the starters longer than in prior preseasons, perhaps until midway through the second quarter.
I'm done... finally. :beer2:
