Anyone have any preseason publications either online or in print that they have been using for at least a couple of years that are accurate in their assessments of teams? I like CFN's information on line, but they are way off every year in predicting how teams will do. Athlon in print seems to remedy that by doing things like picking SDSU 2nd in the MWC, then picking them 89th overall behind 6 other MWC teams in the overall rankings. I guess they get to say, see we were right, either way. Basically looking for a proven source to add to some stuff i am already using. Thanks, FF.

FF, Phil Steele's North Coast sports college magazine is pretty accurate and I like it much better than Mark Lawrences' Playbook. Many of the trends you will find are similar and Phil puts in some other intangibles, such as Yrds per point, yadda yadda, stats that can boggle your mind, but very helpful in determining how teams did with the same returning starters or how they did vs certain teams. Also he breaks down the recruiting classes, coaches, and much more. For the price of the book, it's worth the information...Plus there are tons of places to go online....such as this forum and also coversdotcom. Also loved to use the Gold Sheet and Winning points in the past..

FF, this was on the website for Phil Steele's NC Sports:

"Of course everyone else will say theirs is the best, but put it to the test! Go to the bookstore and hold them side by side. Look a their content and then look at ours! Then you will know that there is only one College Preview Magazine for you to buy! 325+ FULL COLOR pages, two pages on Every 1A team!

You can get your copy at these fine establishments in June!
Barnes & Noble, Borders, Media Play, Walden Books,
Walmart, B Daltons, Hastings & More."

I plan on picking up a copy myself. The mags in FL crack me up with this regional bias. I picked up a mag last week that had all 3 FL schools in the top 11. :puke:

I'll be getting it tonight at Barnes and Noble.

So little time, so much to do!!

Phil Steele's is pretty much all you need. There are some other good ones that you have to call to order, but really Steele's is all you need, IMO.

If you are an ESPN insider subscriber they have write-ups on each team done by Blue Ribbon yearbook. The write-ups are very good. I also like Steele's book!

alot of recommendations for steele's book but I agree, I've seen it at hastings, waldens at the mall, and what not, very informative, though I am referring to the national mag.

I read the regional version also, the BIG 12 coverage and it was pure crap.

but the national mag runs around 10 bucks on avg:thumbs:

I hope Phil Steele is accurate. He has Purdue number 3 in his poll.

Michigan 7
Ohio State 9
Iowa 14

USC 1
LSU 2

I heard Steele on the radio today, he really likes Purdue. 11 starters returning on defense and no MICHIGAN or ohio state on their schedule.

LOL don't know who that is, only know the name from reading an old thread one day when I was bored, something stif put up about all the bitching goin on at UC..

saw it mentioned by rothko that rothko got the boot once. can I hope BP will come back at the same level of forgiveness?

or does rothko have secret mod powers, and banned himself, let himself back in, and then plotted for a whole year for BP's untimely demise/set up.

and then falsely rush out of the woodworks placing blame on others and erecting (giggle i said erect) a site to bring BP back on the premise of looking like he was not the one who did it.

man sometimes I think too much for my own good! LOL

One tip sheet that I haven't used or even seen in a long time is "Sports Reporter". It was very helpful in determining major differences in lines predicted for totals and sides..

This is a great topic...Thanks for posting it, FF!!

Here's a link to a list of preseason mags and how accurate they've been. According to the list, last year P Steele was #1, College Football News #2.

I hope I'm not breaking any rules by posting this link, just trying to help/inform.

I went back last 5 years and noticed all the mags did quite well(all low single digit scores except for a couple of 6's) in the SEC EAST and BIG 12 SOUTH. They did really bad(all double digit scores) with the BIG 10, PAC 10 and WAC conferences.

So far, the peliminary(not all mags listed yet) choices are

BIG 12 South

1. Texas ...7 picked Tex to be #1, 1 for #2
2. Okla......1 picked OKL to be #1, 7 for #2
3. T A&M...6 picked A&M to be #3, 1 tied for 3/4, 1 for #4
4. TTech...1 picked TT to be #3, 1 tied for 3/4, 5 for #4, 1 for #5
5. Ok St....1 picked OK St to be #4, 7 for #5
6. Baylor...everyone picked Baylor to be #6

SEC EAST

1. TENN...6 picked TENN to be #1, 1 for #2, 1 for #3
2. FLA.....1 picked FLA to be #1, 7 for #2
3. GEO....1 picked GEO to be #1, 7 for #3
4. SO CAR..everyone picked SC to be #4
5. VANDY..5 picked VANDY to be %3,3 for #6
6. KENTUCKY..3 pick KEN to be #5,5 for #6

If they are consistent with years past, that's how things should end up or close to it....we'll see at the end of the season.

Didn't have time to do the bad catagories yet...

ahh I was just going by what I read in an old post as quoted by Rothko himself. I wouldn't know anything about it in the short time I've been here. He was prolly on double secret probation, or likes going around saying he was banned to look harder, in the same way people claim to have been in prison to sound tough. LOL

Another recommendation. Picked up this mag today called "Edge" from Statfox. Great articles in it for the beginning handicapper or the handicapper looking to make adjustments just as Vegas/Oddsmakers make every year. Trends are great to have, also formulas that depict huge margin differences based on scheduling and defensive/offensive stats, let alone turnover rates.

Cost is insignificant for the information it has in it for both the Colleges including Bowl info and the NFL.
