In the rematch of one of the great games of this NCAA basketball season, the Duke Blue Devils visit the Florida State Seminoles Wednesday night.
Duke is on the prowl for a perfect Atlantic Coast Conference season. They're 14-0 in conference so far, and after tonight end their regular season by hosting North Carolina Saturday.
Meanwhile, Florida State still hopes of an at-large bid into the NCAA tournament. They're in a three-way tie for fifth place in the ACC at 7-7. But you've heard of "the bubble," right? The Seminoles' whole season could come down to their performance tonight. They've won four of their last six games, but stumbled badly in a 72-61 loss at Virginia Tech Saturday.
Duke held off Temple in Philadelphia Saturday, winning 74-66 as a 10-point favorite. But for the second game in a row the Blue Devils missed several free throws and made some dumb plays down the stretch, which in the end cost their financial backers. Duke is shooting 77 percent from the line as a team on the season, but is just 41 of 64 (64 percent) in their last two games.
Even with the bad plays, lousy free-throw shooting and J.J. Redick's lowest offensive output of the season, the Dukies had a chance to cover vs. Temple, leading by 15 points with 11 minutes to go. But they let the Owls sneak back to within three late in the game, and their backers missed out on cashing in.
It looks like Redick was effected by the recent hype surrounding his fantastic individual achievements, his breaking of the school and conference scoring records. In his last two games, Redick has made just eight of 31 field goal attempts and two of 12 three-point attempts. But all that is behind him now, so maybe we'll see a little more relaxed Redick from here on out.
Duke has won five games in a row in the series with Florida State, but the last one didn't come easy. In the Blue Devils' 97-96 OT win in Durham Feb. 4, the Seminoles shot 49 percent from the floor and outrebounded their hosts 49-36. But with a little help from the zebras (don't forget the "zebra effect" when betting Duke games), the Dukies escaped with the win.
What's the "zebra effect?" Well, part of it can be seen in the fact that Duke has made 105 more free throws (551) than their opponents have attempted (446).
The
oddsmakers
seem to have a pretty good read on Duke this season. The Blue Devils are 12-12 against the spread, 5-5 ats on the road and 7-5 ats in the ACC.
Florida State is 10-8 against the spread this season; 4-3 ats as an underdog, 13-2 straight up and 5-4 ats at home and 7-6 ats in the ACC.
Twelve of the last 13 Duke games have gone over the total.
Duke opened up this game as a 7 1/2-point favorite, but that number was bet down to six by Wednesday mid-morning.
