The Southern California Freeway Series kicks into gear again when the Los Angeles Dodgers visit the L.A. Angels for the opener of a three-game inter-league series Friday night at Angels Stadium.
The Dodgers just got swept three games by the streaking Minnesota Twins, and sit in a tie for second place in the NL West, one game back of the division-leading San Diego Padres.
The Angels just dropped two of three games to the Colorado Rockies and lie in last place in the AL West, seven games back of the division-leading Oakland A’s.
The Dodgers swept three games from the Angels six weeks ago at Dodger Stadium. But the Angels won the season series with the Dodgers last year five games to one.
The Dodgers are 17-22 on the road this season, while the Angels are 17-22 at home.
Dodgers’ starter Brad Penny (8-2, 3.06) has allowed 12 ER and 24 H+W in his last 17 IP. The Dodgers are 10-6 in Penny’s starts this season, the over/under 8-7.
Penny made two starts vs. the Angels last year, giving up 4 ER and 12 H+W in 14 IP.
Bartolo Colon (0-3, 5.74), the AL’s reigning Cy Young Award winner, is still winless this season. He’s already spent two months on the DL with a shoulder injury. In two starts since coming off the DL, Colon has allowed 6 ER and 21 H+W in 12 2/3 innings of work. The Angels are 2-3 in Colon’s starts this season, the o/u 4-1.
Colon has not started a game vs. the Dodgers since 2004.
The Dodgers lead the NL and rank 4th in the majors with a .354 team OBP, and are averaging 5.3 runs per game.
The Angels, on the other hand, own a measly .316 team OBP, 3rd-worst in MLB, and are averaging 4.5 RPG.
The Dodgers bullpen has given up 2 ER and 18 H+W in its’ last 15 2/3 IP.
The Angels pen has allowed 8 ER and 30 H+W in its’ last 20 2/3 innings of work.
Angels’ OF Garrett Anderson is listed variably as day-to-day and questionable for Friday’s game after tweaking his back earlier this week.
The o/u is a surprising 46-27 in Dodgers games this year, 40-34 in Angels games but just 16-21 at Angels Stadium.

The Ultimatecapper Pick: Under normal circumstances Colon over Penny would seem like a no brainer but we like the Dodgers in this spot. Colon is basically in spring training due to his injury that's kept him out for so long. This game isn't a gimme by any means, but the value lies with the Dodger Blue in this one.
