The Boston Red Sox seek their fourth victory in a row when they host the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the second game of a three-game series Wednesday night at Fenway Park.
The Red Sox beat the Devil Rays 7-4 Tuesday in the series opener, snapping a three-game Tampa winning streak.
Tampa is 3-4 on the road this season, 4-7 as underdogs and 8-6 vs. the run line.
Boston is 5-3 at home this season, 9-4 as chalk and 5-9 vs. the run line.
Boston leads the American League East by 2 ½ games over Toronto and Baltimore, while the Rays sit in fourth place, three games back of the Sox.
The Red Sox won the season series with the Devil Rays 13-6 in 2005, while the o/u went 10-6-3.
Tampa’s Wednesday starter Doug Waechter is decision-less this year, with a 3.72 ERA. He’s given up four earned runs and 14 baserunners (hits + walks) in 9 2/3 innings pitched. The Rays have lost both of his starts so far.
TB went 10-15 in games Waechter started last year, while the o/u went 9-15.
Waechter started three games vs. Boston in 2005, allowing 11 ER and 27 BR in 17 IP.
Boston sends Curt Schilling (3-0, 1.64 ERA) to the mound Wednesday. Thus far this season, Schilling has allowed four ER and 14 BR in 22 IP, striking out 16.
The Red Sox went just 5-6 in Schilling’s starts last year, while the o/u went 3-8.
Schilling started three games vs. Tampa in ’05, allowing 13 ER and 26 BR in 20 IP.
The Devil Rays are hitting .265 as a team this year, averaging 5.5 runs per game.
The Red Sox are hitting .269 as a team, averaging 4.8 RPG, and Boston hitters have combined to hit just 12 home runs, the 5th-fewest total in MLB.
Tampa’s bullpen has been atrocious so far in ’06, and has given up 12 ER and 23 BR in just its last 13 2/3 IP.
The Sox pen has allowed five ER and 17 BR in its last 14 IP.
The o/u is 4-4 at Fenway Park this year. Boston home games averaged 10.7 RPG in 2005, 11.4 RPG in ’04.
Wednesday’s projected home-plate umpire Terry Craft has called three games behind the plate this year. The o/u is 2-1 in those games, and they are averaging 9.7 RPG.
Aubrey Huff, Rocco Baldelli and Julio Lugo are all still on Tampa’s disabled list, while Coca Crisp remains on Boston’s DL.
The over is 9-5 in Devil Rays games this season, 6-8 in Red Sox games.
