The Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs are two NL Central teams that are going in opposite directions very quickly as we approach the last weekend of July. The two clubs will meet on Friday night at Miller Park to begin a crucial three-game series and it’s especially important to the Brewers who are fading fast. Milwaukee had a 5.5-game lead over the Cubs entering the All-Star Break, but have seen that lead completely vanish and now trail the World Series champs by 1.5 games. The Brewers have lost nine of their last 11 including an embarrassing 15-2 defeat Thursday afternoon at Washington. Yesterday’s starter Michael Blazek surrendered six home runs to the Nationals in just 2.1 innings of work including four in a row at one point. The Cubs are 11-2 since the Break and have won nine straight road games after a 6-3 victory over the crosstown-rival White Sox on Thursday. Chicago’s starting pitching was a big issue in the first half of the season, but boy have they turned it around. The starters are 10-0 with a 2.51 ERA and nine quality starts in 13 games since the All-Star break. Last year’s World Series hero Kyle Schwarber hit two home runs Thursday and is batting .280 with five dingers and eight RBIs in 15 games since being recalled from Triple-A Iowa.

Pitchers: Cubs – Jose Quintana (6-8, 4.22 ERA) | Brewers – Brent Suter (1-1, 2.84)

Jose Quintana gets his third start with the Cubs and has won each of his first two, both quality starts, while recording 19 strikeouts over 13 innings. Quintana allowed three runs over six innings in his home debut at Wrigley Field on Sunday against St. Louis. He is 1-0 with a 0.60 ERA in two career starts against the Brewers, with the most recent occurring in 2015.

Brent Suter is 1-0 with a 1.96 ERA in four starts since joining the rotation on July 3rd and hasn’t allowed more than two runs in any of those outings. He’s coming off a solid no-decision last time out, holding Philadelphia to one run and five hits over six innings. Suter made two relief appearances against the Cubs in April and allowed four runs in 1.1 innings.

Milwaukee couldn’t be facing the Cubs at worse time. Chicago is on a roll right now especially on the road where their fans call Miller Park the Wrigley Field of the north. Their fans will make their presence known and will add to the Brewers misery in Friday’s opener.

Pick: Cubs -155
