Corinthian Injured, Out of 2006 Kentucky Derby
by horse handicapper Kenneth Strong
March 22, 2006 - Corinthian, who was one of our top Kentucky Derby choices after winning the Fountain of Youth Stakes (later disqualified and placed third) is off the Derby trail after suffering a minor fracture of his left hind ankle.
The son of Pulpit out of the Easy Goer mare Multiply, had both the pedigree and the talent to be a major Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown contender. It is now expected that he will miss the entire Triple Crown.
Corinthian sustained the injury at Belmont Park during an open gallop over the training track there. He will remain in the barn of trainer Jimmy Jerkens as he recovers from what has been described as a small hairline fracture on the front top of his left hind pastern.
The prognosis for recovery is excellent, and being in the hands of one of the game's best young trainers won't hurt Corinthian either. He will now likely walk for 30 days before resuming jogging and then serious training.
Owned by Centennial Farms, Corinthian will hopefully show up again in late summer to take on the Triple Crown race winners in the $1 million Travers Stakes-G1 at Saratoga on August 26.
