While most normal football fans will be glued to their setswatching and wagering on Texas-Oklahoma or a Big 10 or Big 12showdown next weekend, I am anxiously awaiting a Mountain Westtilt in Laramie, Wyoming.
The upstart TCU Horn Frogs in their initial MWC season willtravel to dreaded Wyoming to face a very good Joe Glenn’s squad. As you can see by my pathetic selections of yesterday’s games,I do not fare well when it comes to selecting marquis game winners.
Two of my picks were the Boilermakers over NotreDame and Minnesota over Penn State. My rationale with the NotreDame game was that the linemakers had made Purdue a -3 favoriteagainst an Irish team that always gets the public’s money. Preseasonranking had Purdue ranked 12th and my thought that was Purduewould be pumped on defense after getting steamrolled the weekbefore against Minnesota.
Brady Quinn and his mates torched the Purduedefense for 601 yards in a dominating victory, while Penn StateNittany Lions mauled the Gophers of Minnesota as my day took anugly turn.
My best and most logical play was Connecticutfavored by 11 over Army as I had noticed that a ranked Iowa Stateteam had played at Army the previous week and they had only been-8 to -9 pick. The Huskies thumped the Cadets 47-13!
Urban Meyer got introduced to Alabama this pastweekend and his vaunted offense led by Chris Leak was totallythrottled by the Crimson Tide defense. USC once again proved theirmettle as they stormed back from a 21-3 half time deficit, tobeat the Sun Devils by 10 and while they may have won the game,Arizona State go the all important cover!
As mentioned in the opening TCU is playing greatball in their new conference and have now knocked off perennialpowers Utah, BYU and New Mexico. Meanwhile Wyoming has lookedgreat with their only loss a decent showing at Florida. The elementsin Wyoming can take a nasty turn in October, but TCU has an incredibleoption running attack and they will give the Cowboys a battle. When the spread is posted Sunday night, I look for this game thebe a pick-em and we will dive inside the numbers later this week!
