The Oakland Raiders, who are in desperate need of a victory, will host the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday night to kick-off Week 7 action around the NFL. Oakland was one of the favorites to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl this season, but they have dropped four in a row and sit at the bottom of the AFC West with San Diego. Oakland filled a void this week with the signing of four-time All-Pro linebacker NaVorro Bowman, who moves across the Bay after he was released by the San Francisco 49ers on Friday. Kansas City became the last team in the NFL to lose, dropping a 19-13 decision at home to Pittsburgh on Sunday, but it has won five in a row against the Raiders and has dominated their division over the last two seasons. Despite the loss last Sunday, the Chiefs still hold a 1.5-game lead over Denver in the division and will get them at home next Monday night.

Kansas City averaged nearly 33 points through its first five victories, but they couldn’t get anything going against in improved Pittsburgh defense. The defense has been Kansas City’s weak spot all season, giving up a lot of yards including 194 on the ground to the Steelers. Kareem Hunt rushed for a season-low 21 yards but had five receptions for 89 yards to become the first rookie in league history to amass at least 100 scrimmage yards in each of his team’s first six games. Hunt, the league’s leading rusher, has 885 yards from scrimmage – the third-highest total ever by a rookie through six games. Dual-purpose receiver Tyreek Hill injured his neck in Sunday’s game and it was feared he might have a concussion, but the team pronounced him good to go. Smith threw for 246 yards and a TD last week, failing to post a 100-plus passer rating for the first time.

Quarterback Derek Carr returned to the lineup after missing one game with a fractured bone in his back, but had another mediocre game and has four interceptions in his past three games after throwing only six in the entire 2016 season. The deep passing game has been non-existent during the team’s four-game losing streak with Amari Cooper combining for nine receptions and 51 yards in that span. Marshawn Lynch has not provided the a jolt to the running game as some expected, rushing for two TDs and an average of 42.8 yards a game. Only three teams in the league have fewer than the Raiders’ 11 sacks as the team ranks 23rd in overall defense (349.8). Oakland will be on the road for their next two games (Buffalo, Miami) before entering their bye week.

Oakland is a much better team than they’ve looked recently and I expect them to come at Kansas City hard now that Carr is healthier. Bowman will provide a spark on defense and hold the Chiefs offense in check. Oakland really needs a win and I think they get it here.
