The Boston Celtics open a three-game road trip with a tough contest against the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night, televised live on ESPN from AT&T Center. The Celtics just ended a 4-1 homestand, capped by Wednesday’s 97-90 victory over Dallas, and have won 10 of their last 11 road games since a season-opening loss at Cleveland. The Spurs won the first two on their three-game homestand to improve to 12-2 at AT&T Center after a 117-105 win over Miami on Wednesday in which San Antonio recorded 30 assists and shot 52.9% from the floor. Boston had 25 assists on 36 buckets in its win over the Mavericks, improving to 8-0 against the West. Kyrie Irving, who had 24 points on 10-of-16 shooting in a 108-94 win over the Spurs at home on October 30th, scored 23 to lead the team against Dallas. San Antonio had won 11 straight meetings prior to the loss at Boston in October.

Boston erased a 10-point halftime deficit in Wednesday’s win despite playing without starting guard Jaylen Brown (eye) and occasional starter Marcus Morris (knee). Both players are considered questionable for Friday, but guard Terry Rozier (12 points, nine rebounds) and forward Daniel Theis (season-high 11 rebounds in 17 minutes), stepped up nicely against the Mavericks. Forward Al Horford has 27 assists over his last three games and is averaging a career-high 5.4. Small forward Jayson Tatum recorded his third double-double of the season on Wednesday with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

The Spurs have covered 6 of the last 8 meetings.

This could be the last game San Antonio plays without its star forward Kawhi Leonard, who could make his season debut on Saturday against the Phoenix Suns. Leonard is working his way back from a quadriceps injury and the San Antonio Express-News has reported that the Spurs hope to bring back the two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year when they begin a three-game road trip against the Suns. LaMarcus Aldridge has carried the load without Leonard in the lineup and led eight players in double figures with 18 points against Miami. One of those players was backup shooting guard Bryn Forbes, who scored 17 points and hit all five of his three-point attempts, raising his season scoring average to 6.6.

This will be a good test for Boston, but they will need to be healthy to win a game in San Antonio. The Spurs will be ready for this and look for Aldridge to lead the way.
