The Cleveland Cavaliers will look to slow down what seems to be a runaway freight train in the Golden State Warriors when they play Game 2 of the NBA Finals on Sunday night. The Warriors dominated a highly anticipated Game 1 over Cleveland 113-91 on Thursday as Kevin Durant put on a show. Durant was not part of the first two Finals matchups with Cleveland and showed why he was a highly-touted free agent acquisition in the offseason. The former Thunder recorded 38 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists in Game 1. Steph Curry contributed 28 points with six three-pointers and dished out 10 assists. Durant established himself right out of the gate with six dunks in the first half as the Warriors improved to 13-0 this postseason. Golden State committed just four turnovers on Thursday and pulled away easily despite All-Stars Draymond Green (3-of-12) and Klay Thompson (3-of-16, 0-of-5 from 3-point range) enduring tough shooting nights. Golden State’s underrated defense held Cleveland to 34.9% shooting. Golden State head coach Steve Kerr did not coach Game 1 but reportedly could return for Game 2.

Cleveland’s run through the Eastern Conference doesn’t look as impressive when you stack them up against the Warriors. The Cavs had scored at least 108 points in all 13 postseason games thus far until their 91-point effort on Thursday. LeBron James ended with typical LeBron numbers – 28 points, 15 rebounds, and eight assists – but his eight turnovers were the third most in an NBA Finals game. Cleveland acquired talent during the regular season in an effort to get James the help he desired but point guard Deron Williams, shooting guard Kyle Korver and power forward Derrick Williams combined to go scoreless on 0-of-9 shooting off the bench in Game 1. Kyrie Irving, who hit the deciding 3-pointer with Curry’s hand in his face last June, scored 24 points on 10-of-22 shooting. Kevin Love grabbed 21 rebounds and scored 15 points, while Tristan Thompson was held scoreless and had just four rebounds. The Cavaliers lost Game 1 at Golden State last spring and fell down 3-1 before coming back to win the series, and James is not panicking. “Just get focused on Game 2,” James told reporters. “We didn’t play as well as we know we’re capable of, so we look forward to the next one.”

I really thought Cleveland could compete with Golden State. Cleveland’s defense was not good during the regular season and showed signs of improving in the playoffs, but I think I underestimated how bad the East really is. If Golden State can runaway with games when Green and Thompson have off nights, just imagine what they’ll do when everyone is clicking. I see another Warriors double-digit win.

Pick: Warriors -9
