The long wait is over. The teams are well rested and basketball fans across the country are anticipating the ‘rubber-series’ of this great new rivalry between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors. Steph Curry led Golden State to the NBA title in 2015 over the Cavaliers, but then had a sub-par performance in the 2016 Finals as the Warriors blew a 3-1 series lead and LeBron James and company won the franchise’s first championship. Golden State is 12-0 this postseason and viewed as heavy favorites in Finals matchup No. 3 with -270 odds at most shops in Vegas and in the offshore sportsbooks. Golden State hasn’t lived down the memory of blowing that 3-1 lead in last season’s finals. The turning point in that series was not necessarily their play, but the one-game suspension handed to Draymond Green after a flagrant foul for kicking James in the groin during Game 4. Small forward Kevin Durant (25.2 average) has added to the dominance of the Golden State squad while Curry (28.6) has once again been leading the postseason charge. Shooting guard Klay Thompson is averaging a just 14.4 points on 38.3% shooting in the postseason but he scored 25 or more three times – including a high of 37 – in last year’s Finals. Mike Brown, who formerly coached the Cavaliers, is still serving as coach of the Warriors while Steve Kerr deals with his back recovery woes.

The Cavaliers are 12-1 this postseason and are the defending champs, but are +225 to win the series which baffles power forward Kevin Love. “The whole underdog thing is funny to me, because, yeah, at the end of the day we are defending our title,” Love told reporters. “We’re trying to repeat, which is so hard to do. I think we will use it as fuel, we will use it as motivation, but the idea of playing into it? It’s tough for me to say that is the case. I don’t feel like we’re underdogs.” James averaged 29.7 points, 11.3 rebounds and 8.9 assists in last season’s Finals and has been even better this postseason with averages of 32.5 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Point guard Kyrie Irving is averaging 24.5 points in the playoffs while Love is contributing 17.2 points and 10.4 rebounds. Love recorded double-doubles in all five games of the Eastern Conference finals against the Boston Celtics as he averaged 22.6 points and 12.4 rebounds against them. The Cavaliers will probably need a few of their role players to get going if they want to repeat as champions. Sharp-shooter Kyle Korver (6.4 postseason average) and guards J.R. Smith (6.6) and Iman Shumpert (4.7) have not contributed much this postseason – but in all fairness – they haven’t need to.

The 2017 postseason has been mostly a snore-fest with blowouts all over the place and not real challengers to Cleveland or Golden State. Despite the Warriors being heavy favorites, I see this series going six or seven games. Cleveland has plenty of offense to keep up with the Warriors and seven points is a lot to give in the opening game.

Pick: Cavaliers +7
